I just earned an M.Ed. in Reading Education (graduation date May 18, 2013) from Widener University in Chester, PA, which is a second career for me. I spent a number of years in college teaching, training future teachers at small, liberal-arts colleges, one of which was in a very remote, rural area in Appalachia. After some years there, and with the scarcity of college teaching jobs, I opted to get out of college teaching altogether and get training as a reading specialist. I have been tutoring students in the Main Line area since June, 2010. One of my clients was a now 14 year old who has PDD-NOS and needed help with reading comprehension, organizational and study skills, and tutoring in Science and Social Studies. I worked with her about 2-3 hours per day for nearly 2 1/2 years. I have also had experience with younger students who have phonics problems and are struggling with voice-print match.
I am available to help students who have special needs or who have IEPs. I am familiar with special education laws and have worked with a special education attorney in Philadelphia, who asked me to serve as a case manager for a student who is now at the Vanguard School in Paoli.
If you need help for a child or adolescent, or a college student, who is having problems with writing, reading comprehension, or study skills, I can help you. I have also tutored students for the SAT reading and writing portions. Good diagnostic skills help me to make an accurate diagnosis of what the student needs and develop a corrective plan to address the deficits.
I tutored a student with ADD, aged 20, who attended DELCO. I broke down instruction for him into manageable chunks and determined the best mode of instruction for him through careful analysis and diagnostic teaching. I also reviewed his previous records and neuropsychological evaluation. He was taught study and organizational skills to keep track of his work. He is no longer a client, but is using what he was taught and getting A's and B's in the Criminal Justice program at Delco.
I taught sixth grade for one year in a Catholic school, and that included teaching Science to grades 5-8 as well. I have a PhD in Education and trained future teachers for 7 years full-time. I have operated a tutoring business for elementary, middle-school and high school students since 2010 and have worked with a variety of special-needs students with IEPs.
I have a Ph.D. in Educational Theory and Policy from Penn State main campus, and an M.Ed. in Reading Education from Widener University. I am a PA certified reading specialist and have had 3 years of tutoring students with Asperger's Syndrome/Autistic Spectrum, and dyslexia, ADD and dysgraphia. I have sat in on IEP meetings and served as an educational consultant to a 19 year old neurologically impaired girl at the Vanguard School in Malvern, PA. Tutoring methods used include breaking down goals into smaller, more easily attainable goals and rewarding students for progress made for each goal, so that they feel better about themselves and have a more positive attitude towards learning.
