Greetings!

I am an experienced teacher with an extensive and diverse background. Since beginning teaching in the late 80s, I have taught elementary, middle, high school and college students. I have learned as much from my students as they have from me and my repertoire of strategies, methods, materials, and adaptations reflects that.

I am especially familiar with Special Education students grades 5-12, SAT/ACT prep, developmental college students, and university upperclassmen. In addition to academic acumen, I am attuned to the emotional and social needs of students and know when to change delivery modes/topics/activities.

I love to have fun teaching so I use games, current events, and my sense of humor frequently. Technology will be integrated into most lessons and is a great way for students to hone skills on their own.

At this point in my life I would like to tutor because I know so many kids are struggling in school. While employed at two different colleges, I have seen the blank spots in basic writing and comprehension skills. I have tutored in the past and loved it - seeing a student progress is priceless.

I am passionate about everything I do, and am ready to go!

Grammar

Grammar has taken a beating due to technology. But proper grammar is still the hallmark of a solid language arts education. Understanding grammar will improve comprehension, writing, and success in school.

Computer knowledge is a necessity in the twenty-first century. I have taught computer courses and am very familiar with the latest technology - tablets, smart phones, laptops and all that they can do.

Most people don't need to know everything- but basic mastery of the most used programs and search engines can make the difference between advancement and stagnation.

Reading

The mastery of written language is critical to academic success even in our world of hi-tech conversations using abbreviations. If your child is struggling with reading, the sooner the better.

GED

The GED is an important step for adults wishing to resume their education. SAT Writing

ACT English

Standardized tests like the ACT require a specific skill set that students must acquire, understand and master. My background as an English teacher, editor, and college professor enable me to hone in on each student's challenges and work with him/her to develop strategies that will make test taking easier.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught elementary students in grades K-5. My experiences cover all subject areas as well as students wtih learning disabilities and other special needs. I appreciate that the cognitive and social abilities of young students can vary widely- within the same grade and the same family. My patience, sense of fun and creativity make working with elementary students especially rewarding.

Study Skills

I have taught a college course called "Student Success" that covers many aspects of organization, note-taking, time management, study habits, and general tips and skills to be more successful. This is second nature to me since I was a Special Ed teacher! The rate of success is directly tied to the student's interest in improving - and I do all I can to ensure that everything we do is motivational.

Regents

I am a NY state Regents Diploma holder, was a NY state public school teacher, and am very experienced in working with high-quality test materials and helping students use them to prepare. The NY Regents is the test upon which many state standard tests across the country are based and I am proud to have earned my Regents diploma-and am honored to help others achieve the same success.

Social Studies

I have taught many different sections of Social Studies- World History, American History post 1865, Urban Cultures, and am an avid Civil War buff and reader of historical books. My undergraduate degree is in Political History- for 2 years I took almost no classes other than history! Love it! Know it!
