Miss Mary has been tutoring in the area since early 2000. She has taught in multiple districts and been Education director in a Sylvan Learning Center. In 2005 she added Reading Specialist and Middle School Language Arts certificates to her elementary certificate. She also finished her education masters coursework in Literacy that year. In 2010 she began coursework to add an ESL certificate. She hopes to finish that coursework as soon as she is financially able.
Mary is not a traditional teacher. She works best with individuals and small groups of students, because she feels she can better understand how her students learn and can adjust her teaching to those needs. Miss Mary is a fan of assessment as a tool to find out what her students need most to succeed. She likes to start working at a comfortable level for her students. She then gradually increases difficulty as her students' confidence grows.
Miss Mary believes all students can succeed. She sees confidence as a necessity on the road to success. With this thought in mind, Miss Mary tries to show students how fun learning can be. She cracks jokes, uses silly tactics and strategies, and has been known to cause attacks of the giggles. As students start to have fun with their studies, start to see new strategies working for them, and begin to feel confident in themselves they will begin to succeed academically.
