I am an experienced professional offering tutoring in several subjects. I graduated magna cum laude from Brown University in 1984, concentrating in both French and Cognitive Science, and was elected a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Here is a short summary of my qualifications in different subjects.

French: I lived and worked in Paris for a total of about six years in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, most recently working in Paris from 2003 - 2006, and have visited approximately 25 other times since 1995. I took French for years in school (including at Brown), without ever being able to speak it well -- or even understand it the way French people really speak it -- fast and slangy. As a native speaker of English, I know specifically what parts of French you'll find hard and why, and I can often help in a way that even native French speakers can't. I know what you're going through because I went through it myself and now can make it easier for you.

English / Writing / Grammar / Proofreading: I worked for 25 years as a marketing professional and management executive. Between school and work, I've written hundreds of papers, presentations, analyses, speeches, email blasts, and advertisements. Often just having a second set of eyes and ears will improve the clarity of your message immensely. I can work with you both in person and remotely and am comfortable with all types of writing.

IT-related subjects (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, others more arcane): I have more than 25 years of experience working for independent software vendors in North America and in Europe.

The father of two young children, I have lived off and on in Delaware County for almost 20 years and in the Philadelphia area for almost 30 years (with some time away in London, Oslo, and Paris). I enjoy helping people unlock the joy of mastering a new subject and can offer you, your child, or even your business a wealth of experience, strategies and patience that will improve your results dramatically.

Business

I have worked in Information Technology for 25 years in Sales, Marketing, Product Management, Services, and executive management. I was a co- founder and partner at Transcend United Technologies, which grew from $1.3 million to $45 million in 4 years. That business was sold to AGC Networks in March. (You can verify this via a Google search.). I also had management positions at Siebel and SAP, which are large multinationals.

Computer Programming

I have a BA degree in Cognitive Science (also in French) from Brown University. Cognitive Science is a combination of psychology, linguistics, and computer programming.

I also worked professionally as a computer programmer from 1986 - 1994 in a number of languages, and then worked at large software vendors such as Siebel Systems (now part of Oracle) and SAP AG (one of the largest in the world).

I am proficient in C, C++, Cobol, Pascal, Python, LISP and other languages.

Computer Science

I have a degree from Brown University ('84), where I concentrated in both French and Cognitive Science. Cognitive Science combines computer science, linguistics, and psychology.

I worked as a professional software engineer and software product manager for many years, including time at two very large software companies called Siebel Systems and SAP. Siebel is now part of Oracle, the largest database vendor in the world, and SAP is the largest vendor of enterprise resource planning applications.

I am familiar with the Basic, Visual Basic, Pascal, C, C++, Lisp, and Python languages.

English

I have a liberal arts degree from Brown University (1984, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa). I've made my professional living in Marketing through my writing and communication skills.

A strong knowledge of English, using good grammar, and writing effectively isn't about knowing rules --- it's about thinking clearly about what you are trying to say and knowing how to express your thoughts through appropriate grammatical structures, writing style, and vocabulary.

By helping your child see how English, grammar, and writing is about clarity of thought, the "rules" will suddenly seem like common sense and come easily.

I would love to help your child receive her or his full potential by learning a new way to see language and gain a new perspective on the world.

French

I have a French degree from Brown University (1984, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa). But my knowledge of French and France comes not just from books and school, but from life.

I studied in Paris in 1982-1983 and worked in Paris in 1983, 1984-85, in 2000-2001, and again in 2003 - 2006. I have traveled to Paris and other parts of France on approximately 25 separate occasions since 1990 (not counting the times I lived there). I have been a student, had low-level jobs such as working at a hotel reception desk, and high-level jobs as an IT executive based in Paris and working across Europe.

Learning French well develops critical thinking skills and opens up whole new worlds of experience. I would love to share my understanding of this wonderful language and country with your child and help her or him get the very most out of their interest in French.

Grammar

I have a liberal arts degree from Brown University (1984, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa). I've made my professional living in Marketing through my writing and communication skills.

Good grammar isn't about knowing rules --- it's about thinking clearly about what you are trying to say and knowing how to express your thoughts through the appropriate grammatical structure.

By helping your child see how grammar is about clarity of thought, the "rules" will suddenly seem like common sense and come easily.

I would love to help your child receive her or his full potential by learning a new way to see language and gain a new perspective on grammar.

Marketing

I have worked for 25 years in the information technology industry. For about 15 of those years I have worked in marketing, product marketing, product management, and sales. I have been the Chief Marketing Officer of a $45 million company, as well as a Director of Product Marketing at Siebel Systems (a multi-billion dollar software company that is now part of Oracle.)

I currently work as a business consultant and often do marketing and business development work for clients.

I do tutoring via Wyzant because I enjoy the interactions with students. I would like to be able to offer this subject.

Microsoft Access

I have used Microsoft Access (as well as other Office products) for over 20 years. I am very comfortable with SQL and have developed commercial applications using Microsoft Access as the underlying database.

QuickBooks

I am a small business owner and consultant. I have used Quickbooks for 6 years, both the desktop and online versions. I am very familiar with the Quickbooks, as well as the various payroll systems that interface with Quickbooks, as well as how to use Quickbooks to submit tax forms and other regulatory filings.

In addition, I have a computer / IT background, so am familiar with any kind of technical issues that may arise.

Study Skills

I have a BA from an Ivy League university (Brown University), where I graduated magna cum laude. This required some significant study skills given the work load and level of instruction.

I now make my living as a business consultant (primarily in mergers and acquisitions and business development), where my professional livelihood depends on mastering new material quickly.

I do tutoring because I enjoy it. While tutoring other subjects (French, reading, writing, math) I've noticed that part of the problem many students have is a lack of study skills. I'd therefore like to be able to offer tutoring in this subject.

Writing

Good writing doesn't come from knowing the rules of grammar or having a big vocabulary. Good writing comes from first knowing how to think clearly about what it is you want to say and then knowing how to express your thoughts through appropriate grammatical structures, writing style, and vocabulary.

Writing is like music --- your ideas need to link together in a way that flows the way a good song does. Good writing will "sing" when you read it.

I have been writing professionally for more than 25 years as a Marketing executive and have experience with all types of writing from the elementary school to graduate school levels. I would love to help you or your child be better able to write comfortably and effectively.

I earned a liberal arts degree from Brown University in 1984, where I graduated magna cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
