I have been a French and Spanish teacher for 25 years. I especially like to fire my students up to want to learn. One of my favorite activities is travel. It is so much more fun when you can speak the language!

I have also taught English and SAT. My college minor was Creative Writing.

I look forward to working with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught grade four in all subjects. In addition, I have had the pleasure of teaching French to grades pre-k through 5 in a private school and Spanish and French in Public Middle School. Also, I have taught home school for several years.

English

I've taught English in elementary, middle and high. I am especially skilled in helping with reading and writing.

ESL/ESOL

Each ESL/ESOL student has different needs depending on the country of origin and the skills already obtained. For a beginner adult, we would start with basic life skills vocabulary. For example, we would learn vocabulary and role play going to the grocery, visiting the gym or answering the phone. For a child, the focus would be on learning English through play. There would be an emphasis on vocabulary needed for functioning at school and among friends.

French

For 25 years I have taught French at all levels including Advanced Placement and International Bac. I studied in Paris for a year and have taken students to France several times. For little children I focus on the fun of learning a language. If they have the motivation, they will later pick it up more easily. For high school students I will evaluate the need and zero in on that. I am also available for conversation groups.

Grammar

Having taught foreign languages and English for 25 years, I have spent lots of time on grammar skills.

GRE

I would be especially helpful to you on the GRE. I will be able to identify weak spots and guide you to a better chance with the test. I am available on Saturday mornings or Sunday afternoons.

Microsoft Word

I am not a great expert on Word, but I know the basics. I understand the dilemma of a beginning student of computers. I can slowly teach and encourage a new computer user. I believe in the learn by doing approach.

Proofreading

Having studied several foreign languages for most of my life, I have a good understanding of how English works. I would be happy to help with any proofreading.

Reading

I love to read, myself and have had a talent for finding the right book to encourage others to want to read.

SAT Reading

I have taught SAT skills in a private school in Maryland. I will focus on the specific needs of the student.

SAT Writing

I minored in Creative Writing in college. In addition, I have taught SAT skills in a private school in Maryland.

Spanish

I have taught high school Spanish for many years. Having experience teaching elementary in French, I can also teach smaller children. For the little ones I focus on motivation. For teens I evaluate the need and work on that. I have studied in Mexico, Spain, Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

Study Skills

I have taught for 25 years and have a Master's Degree in French Literature. Study skills have been a must. I have been successful in teaching my students better ways of organizing their study needs.

Vocabulary

I am a huge reader and vocabulary development has followed. I have taught SAT vocabulary in a private school in Maryland. In addition, I have taught French and Spanish for 25 years.

Writing

I minored in Creative Writing in college. In addition, I have taught foreign language for 25 years. As a teacher, other teachers came to me to edit resumes, applications and recommendation letters. I was the 'go to' person for writing needs.

Sometimes it is a challenge to keep children involved and interested when the parents have their own agenda. I think it is important to find a balance between the two. Of course, the parents are the boss in a tutoring environment, but I am the professional. I divide the lesson into sections and try to hit the interest of both student and parent while making my own content the star of the show... read more

1. Make a point out of studying at least 15 minutes each night. Review what was done in class. Then you won't have a mountain of work on the day before your test and you can impress your teacher every day. 2. Look at the teacher's eyes when he or she is talking. Studies have shown that the student who looks the most attentive is the one the teacher thinks of as the good student. This takes... read more

At first I was a bit surprised that the parents of those I tutored actually expected homework. It seemed to me that it was just too much after the student had been in school all day and had other homework. However, it has been helpful to me in particular with the younger students. They take me more seriously and love getting a sticker or a positive written comment on their work. For high school... read more

Maureen brought the results we were looking for! — My son's SAT score for writing was much lower than his verbal or math score. Maureen was flexible about finding times to work around his after-school activities and worked with him for three sessions, focusing specifically on writing strategies. He took the test a second time and his writing score increased by 80 points! We're grateful that she was available to target one specific area in a short ...
