I have been an educator for all of my adult life. I started as an elementary English teacher, then, after getting a M.Ed, I taught as a reading specialist. I am also certified as a school counselor. I believe that children say that they don't like school and/or certain subjects because they are not successful after having tried their best. The teacher's job is to determine how to help children achieve success by utilizing their strengths and employing educational methods that are unique to each child.
I recently retired and my schedule is flexible.
The various subjects that children learn in elementary school are interrelated. Most of them depend on good reading skills. For example, math is not merely doing the computation; it requires reading and understanding a problem to determine what methods and numbers must be used to solve the problem. Other subjects, such as social studies and science, require good comprehension and study skills to understand and apply the subject matter. I want children to see the connection between what they are learning and how it can apply to their daily lives. Then they have a purpose for learning. For over 30 years I have worked with elementary-aged students as an English teacher, reading specialist, and school counselor.
My undergraduate degree is in English Education. I have taught middle school English and have written and edited newsletters which were sent to parents.
I am a retired reading specialist. Children learn to read by various methods and phonics is one of the most universal methods. When children learn the correlation of sound and symbol, they are able to decode many words in the English language. As they become more proficient, they are more likely to want to read more. My goal is to help children become lifetime readers.
Having spent over 30 years in education, most of them as a reading specialist, I know that children do not all learn by the same methods. I also know that communication among the parents, teacher and tutor is essential to progress. I believe that reading is essential to all areas, even Math. If a child cannot read and understand a math problem, he/she cannot decide which process must be used.
Reading is not just being able to say the words on the page, it also requires understanding. Word recognition and comprehension are part of my reading instruction.
Studying is not just memorizing or reading. It is a system that each student should develop to enable him/her to retain, understand, and apply information. My focus is to help each student to develop the system that best works for him/her. We then work together to make sure that the student becomes proficient in using the system. I have taught study skills to individual students as well as to small groups and whole classrooms.
