I am a certified Special Education teacher with over 30 years of experience working with children and adults.

From classroom teacher to Learning Specialist & Supervisor of Learning Center programming at a mental health agency in NY, I have seen how great an impact one's inability to read, effectively use language, focus and process... has on their overall functioning. Struggles and worries go hand in hand with anxiety, depression, behavior....
In turn, mental health disorders greatly impact one's learning and functioning in the world.

I believe that each child/person is unique. I believe that " The system is the solution". I believe that through guidance and support we can find the way to empower your child/ you to succeed.
Everyone has their own, individual learning style. Visual? Auditory? Needs to touch and explore? So many ways...
What works? That is the key. "What works" paired with best practices, and then applied to their "world" leads to an empowered learner

What I have a passion for? Self awareness, Reading, Language based learning difficulties.

I was a Learning Specialist and Supervisor 1988-2009, WJCS - Harry & Jeannette Weinberg Learning Center programs.
I provided individual and small group instruction for children diagnosed within our clinic, as well as for those in school based programming. I provided psychoeducational evaluations in conjunction with clinical staff diagnosis. I supervised the tutoring staff re: learning and behavioral concerns of their students and provided parent consults. I attended learning seminars and workshops re: Dr. Mel L., Parent Management Training with Alan K., PhD, "How to manage a Difficult Child through Ramapo Anchorage Camp, WJCS LC seminars on learning.

I attended LC seminars to gain knowledge about children of the spectrum & testing for non-verbal language disorders & PDD-NOS diagnosis.
I was a classroom teacher (16-21 year olds) and had students who were what is now referred to as "on the spectrum" The class was a mix of students with the then classification of "NIEH" (Neurologically Impaired Emotionally Handicapped).

The majority of children in our programs were diagnosed with reading and language based disorders. I worked and provided hands on individual and group instruction, provided parent/ child support and advocacy in terms of CSE meetings and school intervention.
I attended LC seminars & workshops regarding evaluations, The Science of Reading -Overcoming Dyslexia presented by Sally S.
As a classroom teacher, again, the majority of my students were diagnosed as dyslexic/language impaired.
I have working knowledge of Orton Gillingham, Wilson, Visual Perseption approaches, as well as The Barton Reading and Spelling System.

Elementary (K-6th)

MSEd Special Education - Bank Street College of Education
Certification: N - 6

Before I officially began teaching, I was a nanny working with children 4-6 yrs.
As a camp counselor for children with learning disabilities, I taught the Perceptual Training classes ages 6 to 12.
As a private tutor and through my work as a Learning Specialist & Supervisor at WJCS, the majority of my students have been in K through 6.

I have worked for 30+ years with children and adults who have struggled with reading and language based disorders.
Phonics is the backbone of all successful, evidence based approaches.
It all comes down to phonemic awareness.
Even for those who might struggle with this because they think globally, the approach still breaks down to "word parts" / "word families" rhyming, grouping.
Phonics is the foundation.
I have an MSEd Special Education.

I have experience with Orton-Gillingham and Barton Reading and Spelling programs.

I have over 30 years of educational and learning experiences with children through adults; classroom, clinic based and site based tutoring, tutor training & supervision, and psychoeducational evaluations.

Special Needs

The majority of my work over 30 years has been with children and adults struggling with learning, and often compounded by mental health concerns. I have an MSEd Special Education - Bank Street College of Education.

Study Skills

I have an MSEd Special Education. "The system is the solution."
Effective study skills come from finding what works. How does this person learn best? How can we apply that strategy to all areas?

At the same time, the student needs to become empowered...failure begets failure and results in fear. Self awareness needs to be fostered, in addition to skills and strategies, so that the student learns the difference between what didn't work and what IS working now, and why.
