Hallo! My name is Leigh, and I am a recent graduate of the University of South Carolina with a Masters degree in German. I have two years experience teaching German to American university students, and one year of experience teaching English to German university students at the Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg in Bamberg, Germany. I taught beginner and intermediate courses in South Carolina, and my courses in Germany were conversational English courses for advanced students. I was trained at the University of South Carolina under the Communicative Approach, which is a second language acquisition method that emphasizes communication in the second language with minimal use of the the first language, even as an instructional tool. I have found that the Communicative Approach works much better for intermediate and advanced students than it does for beginners, so I have modified my teaching methods to fit the needs of the students and can do so for my future students. I have a variety of grammar books, visuals, and other teaching tools that can work for the young elementary student or the more serious-minded language learner.
I have a DAF (Deutsch Als Fremdsprache) certification through the Goethe Institut with a score of 4 in all sections, which include reading, writing, listening, and oral. That is a proficiency level of C-1, the second-highest level under European language fluency standards. The certification was granted in 2010. I have since lived a year in Germany, and am working on getting retested because my proficiency level has improved since the first test.
My profile states that I my mobility is within 40 miles from my address. Since the system would not allow me to go above 40, I would like to state here that I have mobility up to 50-60 miles upon an agreement of a short increase in pay to cover gas costs.
I look forward to meeting parents and students and introducing new students to the German language. Bis bald!
