I received my BS (magna cum laude) and MS from Duquesne University - both in Environmental Science and Management. This course of study included extensive work in Biology, affording me a minor in Bio, Chemistry (from basic through Environmental) and Math (from basic algebra through biostatistics). As such, I have a broad range of experience in those 3 fields. Prior to receiving my degrees, I worked in business across several industries, providing me with an in-depth knowledge of most business applications (e.g. Excel, Word).

I currently teach writing, research methods, critical thinking skills and life science at a local college and also at a local university. I am a dedicated teacher and want my students to learn, so I incorporate videos, silly songs, and mnemonics in my teaching, along with whatever else I can think of to help an individual student succeed. Several of my current writing students are not native English speakers, so I am very comfortable helping ESL students. I will work with you to develop study habits, increase your understanding and to clarify your class lessons if needed. I am also willing to work with groups (up to 4 students) at a reduced hourly rate.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I've presented in front of many audiences of various sizes and teach public speaking to many of my writing classes. I've presented different types of information to different groups and can help students regardless of what their industry is.

Study Skills

I studied for my BS and MS concurrently and received both degrees within 6 months of each other. I graduated magna cum laude for my bachelors. To accomplish this dual graduation required intense focus and voluminous study, so I developed ways to study at random times. In the classes I teach, I advocate daily reviewing of notes, if even only 10 minutes, as that repetition helps to solidify information in the brain. I work with each student I tutor to develop study skills specific to their needs as opposed to one overarching method.

Writing

I have taught scientific writing and research skills at the undergraduate level as an adjunct for several semesters at Duquesne University. I don't edit my students' work, I provide feedback in the form of comments so that they begin to understand how readers interpret what they read. I have also taught professional writing at the graduate level. This course is designed with the working scientific professional in mind. In both courses, I follow the Gopen/Swan paradigm to help students understand their writing from a reader's perspective.
