As a public high school science teacher with 30 years of experience (including grades 9-12, gifted through inclusion student), I have a wealth of knowledge and experience with learning and education. After retiring from a very successful teaching career (including a Big on line science competition win) I have been 'redefining' myself as a tutor finding great satisfaction working one on one or with small groups of students.
Some of my students (from college level through junior high school) come to me with failing grades and are discouraged with school, or they are proactive students with high expectations with specific goals in mind. Being the educator I love the challenge of helping students discover how they learn the best. Each student is unique and the brain is amazingly complex as to how it stores and retrieves information. Therefor each student that I work with is an interesting and unique challenge. The rewards of working one on one or in a small group setting and watching students grow and succeed is extremely satisfying. Since my retirement in 2009 I find that I have plenty of time to devote to my preparation for each tutoring session. This preparation would include- outlines, flashcards, visuals/diagrams/demonstrations, charts and online activities. And in some cases scientific experiments.
I have limited my list of certified subjects on this site to those subjects that I have expertise in- including (BIOLOGY, BOTANY, ZOOLOGY, PHYSIOLOGY, NURSING, ANATOMY and PSYCHOLOGY) in general LIFE SCIENCE SUBJECTS-on a middle school, high school and college level. Including mentoring students with SCIENCE FAIR projects, and adequate preparation to be proficient in the Keystone Biology Exam.
As a scientist I love to solve problems and as an educator with 30 years of experience I love working with youth. After teaching biology for 30 years at the high school level, I have since retired and have been very much enjoying tutoring students in life science courses through the WyzAnt website. In 2010 I had the pleasure of tutoring a sophomore student at Delaware Valley College in a course titled Botany. The course was all encompassing. There were 4 main exams and 4 lab practicals. The information covered was rapid and detailed. The topics included introduction to botany, diversity of the botanical world, the plant body and plant physiology. Each topic was broken down into many subtopics with a large amount of information to retain. The professor was very challenging and non-approachable. As a result this student sought my help as an outside resource.
Strategies that were employed were flashcards, charts, diagrams and on-line tutorials. These resources made it much easier for the student to prepare for the exams. My personal interaction with the student was important for the one on one interaction that the professor was unable to provide. She flourished in our sessions and grew in her knowledge of how she learned the best in order to retain such a large quantity of information necessary to be successful in the class. Beginning with a 30% this student ended the course with a 72% and an A on the final exam!
Our understanding of genetics dates back to the work of Gregor Mendel and his study of garden peas a century ago. Our current understanding of genetics includes Mendel's work with patterns of inheritance as well as meiosis and chromosomes, how genes are encoded, how genes are expressed, genetic change (mutations) and modern methods of gene technology. I have taught genetics on the honors ninth grade level, for a pharmacology entrance exam and in a high school Advanced placement course. I have a wealth of experience in this area and really enjoy teaching/tutoring in this exciting field of study
When I was in college as an undergraduate student at Dickinson College in Carlisle Pa. one of the most challenging courses that I had to complete was zoology. My love for the subject of biology (my major) and my passion for animals had me instantly interested in the content of the course. The professor was wonderful and the labs (dissections) were amazing. During the duration of this course I truly learned 'how to study'. I was pushed to a new level of understanding concerning how I 'learned the best'. And as a result I was able to develop strategies that helped me to retain such large amounts of comparative information (necessary to be successful in the course).
The students that I have tutored from Temple school of Nursing and Delaware Valley Community College, as well as junior and senior high school students all are at this 'same place' in their academic experience.
