My name is Wendy and I have years of experience as a tutor and teacher with students of all ages. I love to help inspire students in a range of subjects, including reading, math, Spanish, writing, study skills and test preparation for the GED or SAT.
I graduated with honors from Duke University, where I majored in developmental psychology with a concentration in elementary education, and a minor in Spanish. I am working towards my Masters in the Science of Instruction, which means learning about teaching in its many forms, varied learning styles, and curriculum development.
I have taught in classrooms from kindergarten through second grade, developing skills in phonics and reading instruction. Then for six years I worked for a non-profit adult education provider, where I trained other tutors in math and reading. I also prepared students for standardized tests and taught all subjects for the GED exam. I am a statewide Teacher Coach in the area of Learning Differences, which helps me to work with individuals with suspected or diagnosed learning disabilities.
My teaching style is focused and organized, but I adapt the pace of tutoring and the content to meet your specific needs and interests. I try to help anxious or reluctant learners feel at ease with me and with the subject we are studying.
I am able to be flexible with tutoring times and locations to meet your needs and fit busy schedules.
As your tutor I hope to make learning more fun, engaging, and successful.
Thanks for taking the time to read my profile and please feel free to contact me by email with any questions at all, and to see if we would be a good fit. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing how we can work together!
I have worked as a tutor with individuals and small groups learning math skills from the kindergarten to 6th grade level. In the classroom, we used Everyday Math, Miquon Math, and Number Power texts, and also incorporated many kinds of hands-on manipulatives and real world materials to help make lessons meaningful and enhance retention.
I love geography - it is one of my favorite subjects, as it connects to so many aspects of our world: people, places, and cultures. I learn as much about the world as I can through books and travel, and am an avid map reader as well. I also took a great Geography course during my graduate studies at Drexel.
In working with children or adults who wish to develop their handwriting skills, I employ an approach that involves practice, patience, repetition, and encouragement. I have had to opportunity to work with students in kindergarten through 2nd grade using the "Handwriting Without Tears" texts and adults using Nelson and D'Nealian books. Because difficulty with handwriting can stem from a range of visual, fine motor, or cognitive-expressive issues, I work with students first to see how they learn best and how they feel about writing. With time and practice we can together develop print and/or handwriting skills that will serve students well through life even in the digital age.
I have worked with prealgebra and algebra students both one-on-one and in small groups for the past six years, helping them prepare for standardized tests and for the GED exams. My lessons include both abstract concepts and real-world examples with hands-on materials. I work to build students' understanding so that they can solve problems correctly and also understand why they came to the answers they did. I use a range of textbooks, exercises, and computer programs to build up math skills.
I studied education at Duke University and curriculum and instruction at Drexel. I have taught students from kindergarten to second grade. In my job as a teacher and tutor trainer in adult education, I used multiple reading instruction strategies to build skills in phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. As a tutor I help students to become more confident and efficient readers.
I have spoken Spanish since living in Mexico as a young girl and love to share the language with others. I have a minor in Spanish from Duke University where my coursework included composition and literature. Traveling and working in various countries, including Honduras, Bolivia, and Spain has taught me about accents and cultures, all things I can share with the students I tutor.
