I have experience working with English as a second language learners from my time as a full time ESL teacher in South Korea. I was responsible for teaching writing, grammar, vocabulary, phonics, social studies, reading and science, all on the primary level. I am also a great writing coach, and have experience working as both a writer and editor for online and print newspapers. With that said, I can offer editing and compositional advice for essay writing on the high school and college level. My strategy as a tutor is to understand where the student has difficulties, assess their strengths, and build from there.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am currently working as a tutor to elementary aged children in a private language school, assisting in subjects including grammar, writing composition, vocabulary and Earth science. This comes after being an ESL teacher of elementary aged children in South Korea for a year and a half. My tutoring method responds directly to the problem areas faced by the student. After I identify the stress point, I work persistently to find detours around the stumbling block, building confidence and ability in tandem.

ESL/ESOL

I taught ESL in South Korea for a year and a half, now I am going back to school to get my masters in Teaching English as a Second Language. I work every week with South Korean expats on improving their English mastery, and do so by relating to them on their level. In the spring, I will be joining an ESL tutoring workshop to hone my teaching skills in this field.

Grammar

As a freelance journalist, knowledge of grammar is part and parcel to being taken seriously in the field. I have extensive experience both as an editor/proofreader of others' work, and also teach English grammar professionally.

Guitar

I've been playing guitar religiously since I was 12. Despite this fact, I have never been in a Gospel or Christian Rock band. I have supplemented my own discoveries with music theory in high school and college. As such, I record and play my own music, often in collaboration with others.

Literature

I majored in English literature in college, including surveys of Early modern, Victorian, American, modernist, postmodern and post colonial literature. I was also taught various analytical approaches to literary criticism within these courses.

Phonics

My phonics teaching background comes from my time as a primary school ESL teacher in South Korea. While there I taught out of an American Phonics textbook made by Sadlier-Oxford, a broad application K-12 phonics primer ideal for ESL learners. Primary subjects covered were grapheme and phoneme matching, and differentiating between homographs and homophones within specific spoken and written contexts.

Proofreading

I worked for three years as a journalist and copy editor. During this time, I was responsible for ensuring that my work and that of my colleagues was fully up to AP style guidelines. This was followed by working as an ESL tutor in Korea for 18 months. I continue to work as an ESL tutor and much of my work consists of checking student writing for grammar and spelling errors.

Religion

I minored in comparative religion in college. I became versed in the writings of the Old Testament, the New Testament, and various strands of Buddhist and pre Buddhist folklore of southwestern China, Tibet, India, and Thailand. I also studied the diffusion of Buddhism from China through Korea and Japan. I can use my background in religious studies to help students approach organized religions as dynamic agents in the statecraft, gender roles, dietary practices, laws, and identities of their attendant cultures.
