As a tutor, I specialize in doing what is most important in private instruction: adjusting instruction to meet the individual needs of each of my students. The reason most people ask for tutoring is because their previous instruction has not allowed them to meet the academic goals they have established for themselves. I realize that each student has different goals, different needs, and different motivations for obtaining the the things they want. The job of a master teacher is to tap into each of these priorities and adapt instruction based on what the student requires. In adapting instruction, my students find a safe place where they are able to learn what is required of them, but also in a way that makes sense to the student and meets each student where they currently are academically. I pride myself in my ability to instill a love of learning in my students and instill practices that not only apply to the specific subject I am teaching but also build habits and routines that students will be able to successfully use throughout their entire academic careers.
I received my degree from Ithaca College in Music
Education and Performance in 2010. There I intensely studied music theory
, performing on a multitude of instruments, and also began honing a craft of teaching a variety of age levels and abilities how to love and create music. The liberal arts nature of the college also allowed me to study a variety of other topics such as mathematics
, and philosophy
. While attending college, and similarly in high school, I established private lesson and tutoring connections throughout all eight years. I founded a tutoring/lesson partnership with the college and local high schools that matched first and second-year college students with soon-to-be high-school graduates with the purpose of preparing them for the college transition and giving them some exposure to life post-high school. With this program I had the opportunity to originate and lead several SAT prep
courses, literacy circles, and writing
Since graduating college I have joined the Mastery Charter School network. I first joined as a general music
teacher and have since had that role as well as a writing teacher, reading
specialist, core classroom reading teacher, and teacher coach. At Mastery we are at the forefront of reading and mathematics instruction and finding intelligent, common sense solutions to teaching problems. I have encounter an enormous variety of students with differing learning styles and so have become adapted to teaching many different subjects in a large number of ways. I always strive to adapt any lesson to specific student and students who work with me often comment on the individualized attention and care they receive.
