My name is Sam, and I have been tutoring professionally for 10 years (since graduating from high school, having tutored voluntarily throughout high school, too). I specialize in the SATs (and PSATs), though have taught a variety of subjects to children ages 6-18, as well as many adults.
EXPERIENCE: In terms of my work with children, I have worked mostly with middle and high school youth. I currently teach at an afterschool program for middle school students in North Philly. I also coordinate a high school-aged youth group on the weekends, and have been tutoring high school students privately for a long time (I specialize in SATs and also have a lot of experience working with students on their college applications). In addition, I have extensive experience working with students with mental disabilities, including both learning and psychological issues.
With adults, I have taught both GED
courses and ESL
as a Second Language
) courses with an organization
in Philadelphia. I have also taught adult religious education classes.
STYLE: I believe that it is important to build a good rapport with my students. If a student does not like you, he won't care what you teach him, he won't do your homework, etc. In short, he will not learn from you. To this end, I take care to have FUN with students, LAUGH sometimes with them, APPRECIATE that having a tutor/studying is NOT the most fun thing in the world! I am also very creative and always try to come up with unique and interesting assignments for my students. When I get a new student I try to figure out immediately if they are a visual, auditory or kinesthetic learner, then I cater my teaching style to their learning style. Every child is different, every child learns differently, and teachers and tutors must learn to cater to these differences!
I have been tutoring privately for a long time, but I am still relatively young and know how to get students to like me, respect me, and learn from me. My students and their parents consistently refer me to their friends and neighbors. Thank you for your consideration!
