Education and Experience:
My name is Sam and I was trained as a writing tutor during the first semester of my sophomore year at Villanova University in Fall 2010. I tutored graduates, undergraduates, and continuing education students for 6 hours per week, per semester until I graduated in Spring 2013 with my BS in Mechanical Engineering. I now work full-time as an engineer in the greater Philadelphia area.
My experience ranges from tutoring first graders on reading and small sentence structure to 12th graders on college application essays to undergraduates on philosophy term papers. My goal is to train you on how to become a better writer by giving you tips and directions that you can refer back to days after our session has ended. That goal applies whether you are writing creatively or analytically, at any age.
The Details of a Session:
I prefer my sessions to last one hour. I start off by building a rapport with you, student to student. We will talk about what your learning style is like and what your experience has been in the class that we are discussing. The reason that I said, "student to student," is because I love to learn about what you are writing about! By the end of our session, I hope we can come away with a better understanding of how we have improved your writing style and how you can continue to do so on your own.
The Detailed Version of the Details:
You might be asking yourself, "Why would a mechanical engineer be a good tutor for me or my child?" While I was working as a writing tutor, I was being trained to think critically and solve complex problems using calculus and differential equations. I bring these specialized skills to your desk to solve your writing problems from the most logical angles of attack. You will notice that I ask a lot of questions and think about what I say before I respond to your answers. I will ask you to read what you have written out loud while I read along so I can absorb that information and discover what needs improvement. If I make a suggestion, I will tell you why I am making one and give you time to think it over and write it down in a way that you can understand it when our session has ended.
I hope I have peaked your interest with my years of experience and unique perspective. Please do not hesitate to contact me through Wyzant where we can discuss your writing needs and availability. I look forward to working with you.
I graduated from Villanova University in May 2013 with my B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. I focused my education on thermal fluid system design and currently work for a building controls company where I have the chance to apply basic theories of HVAC every day. I do not have much experience tutoring in engineering, but I could definitely be helpful if given the chance.
