Hello and thank you for visiting my profile!

Enthusiasm and compassion are the cornerstones of my teaching. My goal in tutoring is to help my students become more successful, confident, and engaged in what they are studying. I love to learn, and I find tutoring very rewarding because I enjoy sharing that love of knowledge with my students. I want to help my students experience education as the wonderful opportunity it is.

I have seven years of experience as a college professor, secondary school teacher, and tutor. During that time, I have worked with a wide variety of students across a wide range of subjects including English, math, writing, test prep, social studies, science, and humanities.

During my own time in school, I completed my master's degree at Columbia University in one year with a 4.0 grade point average. Before that, I scored above the 90th percentile on both the math and verbal sections of the SAT and practice GRE (I was admitted to graduate school before taking the actual GRE). So, my approach to education is grounded in both my professional training and my personal experience.

I have experience assisting students who require extra support, as well as working with advanced students who require a challenge beyond what they are currently doing in class.

I can travel to meet my students in a place convenient for them.

When I work with a student in person, I typically come to that student's home or school, but we could also meet in a library or other location conducive to studying. I usually have availability during the daytime and can meet with students during their study hall or other time during the school day, if that is something their school allows.

I am also available to my students via phone in the event they need help outside of our scheduled time together.

I realize my rate is not the lowest you'll see, but I believe I offer a good value based on my experience and education. I am happy to provide our first session free of charge, so you can get a sense of the quality of my work as a tutor. For subsequent sessions, WyzAnt provides a prepaid discount, and I am able to offer a sliding scale if needed.

Furthermore, It is very important to me that my students and their families feel satisfied with every tutoring session they receive. I would not accept payment for a session where a client felt less than 100% satisfied. Happily, this has never happened, but it will always be my policy.

If you have any questions or would like to set up our complimentary first session, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I taught for 5 years in a private school for students with learning disabilities. Many of my students had a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD. Through both formal training and classroom experience, I became proficient in a variety of strategies to help students with ADD/ADHD feel more confident and be more successful in school.

Aspergers

I taught for 5 years in a private school for students with learning disabilities. Many of my students had a diagnosis of Aspergers. Through both formal training and classroom experience, I became proficient in a variety of strategies to help students with Aspergers be more successful in school, both academically and socially.

Chess

I am familiar with the rules and basic strategies of chess. I have been playing chess for 20 years, and I was the faculty adviser to my school chess club for 2 years.

Dyslexia

For five years I taught in a private school for students with learning disabilities. During that time, I worked with several students who had dyslexia.

I am familiar with multiple strategies that are often helpful to students with dyslexia. Since each student is different, I focus on finding the particular strategies that work for each individual student.

In my experience, dyslexia can not be "cured," but there are things that can be done to help students be more successful in school and in life.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a degree in English education and six years experience as a classroom teacher.

I have experience as a substitute teacher and tutor at the elementary level.

I also have several years of experience as a 6th grade classroom teacher.

Guitar

I have been playing guitar for over 17 years now. In that time I've written, recorded, and released three albums of original music, played live a couple hundred times, and toured the East Coast several times.

My guitar technique focuses on fundamentals, fun, and feeling, so if you are seeking a highly technical teacher, I may not be the person you're looking for.

However, if you want to learn the basics of playing the guitar for songwriting, performance, or fun, I'd love to show you what I've learned over the years.

We can work on some of your favorite songs by other artists; I can help you write your own songs; or we could do a combination of both.

Drop me a line, and we'll talk more about it.

Public Speaking

I teach a public speaking class at a local university, and I have been a teacher for several years, which involves daily public speaking.

Some of the things I focus on are speechwriting; pre-speech preparation; overcoming nervousness; gaining and holding an audience's attention; body language; using visual aids; and answering questions from the audience.

Social Studies

I taught social studies at the secondary level for five years. During this time, my areas of specialization were geography and US history and government. In my personal studies, social studies is a prime area of interest for me, and I have read widely on the topic.

Study Skills

I taught for six years in a private school for students with learning disabilities. During that time I worked as both a tutor and classroom teacher with many students who were very intelligent, but struggled with study skills and organization.

It has been my experience that mastering study and organizational skills is often the key that unlocks academic success for many students.

I have also found that individual tutoring is the best forum for teaching and reinforcing these skills.

I am familiar with several tried and true strategies for helping students get organized; prioritize their work; and study efficiently. I take an individualized approach to each of my students and carefully tailor our activities to meet their needs.
