I have worked as a classroom teacher (K-12), for over 10 years, which aided me in acquiring an acute understanding of the academic/developmental concerns of school-aged students. In this capacity, I developed a multidisciplinary/multicultural curriculum, which complied with Curriculum Guidelines and State Standards. In prior teaching positions, I instructed various classes/levels including special education, regular, bilingual, early childhood, and emotionally disturbed (lab cluster) populations. Further, I became acquainted with most of the assessments administered within the urban school system, and have devised effective (group/individual) strategies to help students acquire competencies. I have also familiarized myself with a number of early literacy curricula, focusing on cultural inclusion, and enacting effectual techniques for oral language development, phonics, phonetic awareness, and comprehension. Moreover, I have vast experience in creating/amending academic enrichment/ homework support plans to facilitate, and augment student progression in a supplemental tutoring capacity. I have also became adept in developing state assessment driven lesson plans, and my planning was always compliant with English Language Arts Curriculum Frameworks and Literacy Collaborative efforts such as Writers’ and Readers’ workshops. My lessons are often hands-on, and students adopt an active role in learning. Additionally, I incorporate self-esteem building, conflict resolution, cultural appreciation, environmental appreciation, and community service objectives into my curriculum in an effort to promote a social responsibility mentality. To add, I have supported leadership with several best practice initiatives, including curriculum development for efforts, such as a Family Math Night Event, Parent Literacy Workshops, and a Health/Nutrition Awareness series.
Furthermore, I've been trained using Math Investigations techniques. These strategies allow children to make personal connections with math through exploring the tangibility and versatility of numbers. It also encourages students to create effective methods for solving algorithms and incorporates strategies previously created by members of students' peer groups. To add, I have worked as a High School Math Teacher for two years, and I developed expertise in devising multidimensional strategies to assist a special education population in acquiring concepts.
