Do you struggle with math or science? Do you wish you had someone to explain things better to you? Would you like the opportunity to ask all your questions freely? Do you just wish things *made more sense* in class? I am a teacher who specializes in figuring out what it is that a student needs in order to function at his or her best academically. Maybe you just want a more solid understanding of what is going on in class, so that you feel more comfortable with the material. My approach is to build from what you already know -- going back to foundations if necessary -- to construct a framework for incorporating new information. When students feel lost, it is usually because some essential connections have not been made, some background information is missing. My goal is to help you make those connections, and fill in that missing background, so that science and math are no longer foreign languages. When people feel like things make sense, many of them find they are actually interested in the subjects they used to dread.
I have worked with learners of all ages, from elementary school kids through adults, with most of my experience at the high school and early undergraduate levels. I have a wide background in the natural sciences; I can help with all high school science courses as well as college level calculus, biology, and chemistry. I have taught formal SAT prep courses; I can help you prepare for both the math and reading sections of the SAT.
I went to a public high school in New England, I did my undergraduate work at Yale, and then I took some time off school (during which I worked at a natural history museum, lived in Italy for a while, and worked as an Italian translator) before going back to school at Temple University in Philadelphia. I did a Master's degree in Linguistics and now I'm finishing my PhD in biology. For the past several years I have taught biology to Temple undergraduates, and also to high school students at a public school in Philadelphia, as part of a national program to bring real scientists into the science classroom. I enjoy working with young people, especially those with real curiosity -- which almost everyone ends up discovering they have. There is nothing more rewarding than helping someone *make sense* of what was once alien and confusing.
Even if you are a relatively strong student, but feel you could gain more from a deeper understanding of science, or if you feel that your curiosity is not satisfied by your coursework, I can work with you on supplementary material that follows your interests. Whatever your level, my role is to bring the subject to you where you are, engage you, and help you develop both the necessary background and the right toolkit of strategies that will allow you to approach future challenges with confidence. I love science and math, and it is my own enthusiasm for the material that fuels and shapes my teaching style; I hope I can transmit some of that to you, as I have to many students in the past.
