I am a lover of English, reading, and writing and communicating. I also enjoy working with kids. In 2010, I went back to school in Massachusetts to attend a post-graduate course for getting my teaching certificate. At the time, I was also a volunteer English language tutor for a married couple from Egypt. I became certified as an English language arts teacher for grades 5-8 in Massachusetts. I spent the next year or so substitute teaching before moving to Philadelphia for family reasons. Now I work as an afterschool literacy leader in my local library branch for the Free Library LEAP program. The work is exhilarating, always different, and I enjoy connecting with the kids. Children of all ages attend the program, and they all have different skill sets. As an afterschool leader I am not able to give the attention I would give as a tutor, but at least the experience acquaints me with some of the challenges these children face.
All these experiences and skills come to bear on my tutoring ability. It is important for children to have ownership and really learn the skills they need to succeed. Although I'm not certified in ESL, my experience has given me a foundation for working with different language learners. English is one of the most important communication skills for simply succeeding in life, and I hope to make a difference as a tutor.
