Several years of working with dyslexic and ADHD students has enabled me to be a firm, but friendly and creative tutor of Reading and Writing. I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory method. I have also had great success teaching creative writing, cooking and music. Everyone learns differently and I enjoy patiently working to find the best path towards a student's goals.

As a Reading and Writing tutor for 4 summers at the Delaware Valley Friends School in Paoli, PA, I worked daily one-on-one sessions with 4 students each summer for five weeks. With each of my students we would spend the first few sessions getting to know each other and doing evaluations to determine the student’s abilities in decoding, reading comprehension and writing. Some of my students presented difficulties which we turned into unique learning opportunities with much success.

One autistic student did very poorly with traditional tests for reading comprehension, but showed he did understand what he was reading when I asked him to draw a picture and provide a caption to illustrate the previous day’s reading. His summer project became an illustrated book report with delightful and accurate captions.

A young man, who needed help with his writing, enjoyed telling me about his love for hunting, fishing and camping. We read selections of Ernest Hemingway's short fiction and non-fiction as great examples of carefully crafted writing and I created word choice, sentence structure and paragraph-building exercises each day. By summer's end this young man was a careful self-editor and his writing was much clearer and to the point.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Clarinet

I am an experienced sax and clarinet teacher, currently teaching private students as well as being affiliated with King's Music Store in South Philadelphia.

I have been performing and studying saxophone and clarinet for over 20 years. I've played at colleges, clubs, festivals, corporate and social events through out New England and the Mid Atlantic states.

Phonics

I have extensive training in the Orton-Gillingham Method as well as hundreds of hours of experience tutoring reading and writing. The O.G. Method is based on the sounds of the 26 letters of our alphabet and the 44 sound combinations that we use. Phonics is at the heart of this wonderful technique.

My teaching style with young children is relaxed and patient. We move quickly over the material when we can, but take our time when it is clear that the student needs more time to absorb the information.

I try to share the feeling that learning to read is fun by creating steps that can be mastered with pride.

Study Skills

Several years of working with dyslexic and ADHD students has enabled me to be a firm, but friendly and creative tutor of Reading and Writing. I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory method. My training included executive functioning and study skills.

Some of my students were very bright, but lacked basic executive functioning and study skills. It was always very gratifying to see the results of just a few weeks of focused attention on creating and utilizing simple, easy to remember tools. Students quickly picked up on how much easier it was to do well, in less time and without the frustrations they once felt.
