Several years of working with dyslexic and ADHD students has enabled me to be a firm, but friendly and creative tutor of Reading and Writing. I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory method. I have also had great success teaching creative writing, cooking and music. Everyone learns differently and I enjoy patiently working to find the best path towards a student's goals.
As a Reading and Writing tutor for 4 summers at the Delaware Valley Friends School in Paoli, PA, I worked daily one-on-one sessions with 4 students each summer for five weeks. With each of my students we would spend the first few sessions getting to know each other and doing evaluations to determine the student’s abilities in decoding, reading comprehension and writing. Some of my students presented difficulties which we turned into unique learning opportunities with much success.
One autistic student did very poorly with traditional tests for reading comprehension, but showed he did understand what he was reading when I asked him to draw a picture and provide a caption to illustrate the previous day’s reading. His summer project became an illustrated book report with delightful and accurate captions.
A young man, who needed help with his writing, enjoyed telling me about his love for hunting, fishing and camping. We read selections of Ernest Hemingway's short fiction and non-fiction as great examples of carefully crafted writing and I created word choice, sentence structure and paragraph-building exercises each day. By summer's end this young man was a careful self-editor and his writing was much clearer and to the point.
