I'm Sarah! I love teaching arts, literature, writing and history. I'm a college student here in Philly and I went to an independent private school in Boston for high school, so I've been through the standardized tests and application process for both secondary school and college. I have a younger sister applying to college now, so I'm once again in the throes of reading over various drafts and navigating the Common App. Aside from tutoring, I also like theatre, dance, ice skating, and chocolate! Please email me with any questions.
My teaching approach:
Writing, Reading, Arts, History & Literature: All too often, students who are incredibly creative and intelligent struggle within traditional education systems. Classrooms can fail to excite creative thinkers, who then get left in the dust. As an artist, arts educator and dramaturg, I'm curious and passionate about literature and history, and how these things inform our society in the present. I want to help other students find ways to be excited about these subjects. The things you learn in school should feel applicable to your life and I can help you rediscover how, while helping with any material that feels particularly challenging or inaccessible. I've worked as an educator at The Huntington Theatre Company and Stoneham Theatre in Boston, The Berkshire Theatre Group in Western Mass and with Philadelphia Young Playwrights here in Philly. I've also taught younger children at the Sunflower Summer Stage in Cambridge, Massachusetts and at the John F. Kennedy elementary school.
College Counseling: Applying to colleges can be extremely daunting. Often high schools aren't able to provide the comprehensive college counseling that many students need to find the right match. I've successfully been through the Common Application, with all its essays and supplements, and am now helping my sister through the same process. I’m a pro at asking the right questions and guiding research to choose the universities that will be the best match for individuals. I'm also great at editing essays to make sure your unique voice is coming across.
