I enjoy the use of play, humor and a critical lens to teach contemporary art, fine arts, visual studies and multimedia with central themes addressing anything from the personal to ideas about science, society and the environment.

Mediums and subjects I enjoy teaching are drawing/painting, performance art, video art, installation art, 2D/3D design and sculpture; participatory and relational aesthetics, conceptual strategies, self-publications (ei: zines, book art), tactical media, multimedia, visual studies, networked culture, and contemporary art (conceptual to transdiciplinary practices).

I can also help you prepare an awesome portfolio for any fine art and/or design school, grant proposals and/or commissions. I can teach you how to use constructive criticism and techniques to strengthen your art and design practice. Last I can help you find the appropriate readings and information to develop your artistic and/or academic statements.

For me, there is little distinction between art making, activism, teaching and life. As a research-based artist whose work consistently uses architectonics and frameworks of social control to interrogate justice, state surveillance and the built environment in relationship to our body, I am comfortable waxing on the overlaps between narratives of violence to narratives of the mundane, of the everyday and of the personal to address evocative and challenging subjects. All of these things are part of the same practice; a part of the same unending journey I am living and breathing.

Additionally, I combine social and cultural theory through a range of mediums to deliver intriguing, playful and thought provoking multidisciplinary art projects and curriculum. I am at ease delivering projects and seminars that involve participation and critical thinking at the intersection of art making and scientific inquiry. I have worked with children and youth (from immigrant and under served communities) in the Bay Area of San Francisco and Philadelphia for over 10+ years. In the past 4 years, I have been teaching, lecturing and assisting course development in the fields of Visual Studies, Socially Engaged Art and Tactical Media to undergraduate and graduate students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, San Francisco Art Institute, and University of San Francisco.

I am a multidisciplinary-research based artist, designer, activist and founder of the Counter Narrative Society (CNS) – a research artistic unit that works to initiate counter narratives about bio-power, urbanism, culture and technology.

I am originally from San Francisco, born in Chile and I have recently moved to live in Philadelphia after earning a Master of Science in Art, Culture and Technology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The impetus to move here was to work with the CNS in two art conceptual projects based on the city’s history and spatial infrastructure. For example, one of them is a historical and architectural investigation about how institutions of social control give birth to modern democratic concepts on justice, incarceration, and penitence. The locust of this investigation is at the former Walnut Street jail. In several months this investigation will serve as materials for the next phase of my long-term project titled “When the invisible Punishing Machine is everywhere: THE WEIGHT I CARRY WITH ME”. The other project JOURNEY TO REFUGE (formerly “In Search for New Refuge”) is about how in the process of searching for love and a unique place to rest in the post-industrial Philadelphia, I am finding a vibrant community of activists, inventors, and creators.

As a professional research-based artist and educator, I like to instill in my students that drawing is as much as an intimate tool to explore personal ideas as it is also a tool to explore elaborate concepts that can serve as structures for their paintings, murals, installations, sculptures, performance art, public/environmental projects, and inventions. I have a BFA with an emphasis on interdisciplinary art in public and installation art with a strong foundation in realism, fiction and experimental drawing and painting. I also hold a Master of Science in Art, Culture and Technology so while I have evolved into a multimedia performance-based artist, designer and inventor, drawing continues to be my most essential medium.

Therefore, students who are looking to learn the ability and understanding of drawing, as it is relevant to further their skills in their pursue to contemporary arts, fine arts and visual multimedia, this is it. Whether you are a beginner or advance student or curious enthusiast, I will teach you the basic foundations of realism, fiction and abstractions through figure drawing, still life and landscape drawing. We will also explore the effects of light on form, space, structure, volume, movement, and composition. And we will do all of these, through dry and wet mediums (pencil, charcoal, ink and more).

Video Production

As a performance multimedia-based artist with 7+ years of experience in video production and related media, I like to instill in my students the processes that takes to produce a video from start to finished. I have an BFA on interdisciplinary arts and I hold a Master of Science in Art, Culture and Technology from which I have developed a strong foundation in multimedia arts where video making is an essential medium for my time-based work and video-art that I create for (online, galleries, performances and public interventions).

Therefore, whether you are a student, professional or enthusiast interested in enhancing your understanding of digital video production concepts and techniques using various digital video-editing systems let me know. Through hands-on individualized sessions, we can work on the editing process from digitizing raw video to producing finished segments. These may involve diving into the understanding of video production fundamentals, the importance of continuity and conceptual strategies as well as the fundamentals of lighting/audio. To enhance the sessions we could also look at video formatting that are required for various media outlets. Last but not the least, if you are seeking for advice on how to move forward on a particular video project, here I am.
