I come to tutoring via a broad range of experiences, all of which contribute to my success as a tutor. I have practiced law, taught high school social studies and French, taught English as a Second Language at a community college and community center, tutored a young thespian who rehearsed during normal school hours, tutored dozens of students in grades 9-12 as part of my employment at a non-profit educational organization and tutored several young people in Spanish. I have been highly active in education for the better part of the last twenty (20) years, from working closely with my own two sons when they were learning to read and write to having the experiences listed above.

First and foremost I make a connection with the person I am tutoring. I am genuinely interested in meeting a broad range of people and enjoy conversing with others. From the youngest to the oldest, from the outgoing to the reserved, from the eccentric to the more conventional, I am accepting of and truly interested in others.

Of equal importance is the fact that I have an excellent educational foundation that enables me to be a very knowledgeable and competent tutor. I graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Smith College, receiving a B.A. in anthropology and French. I then received my J.D. from Columbia University School of Law. Later, I received my Pennsylvania teacher certification from Swarthmore College to teach social studies, French and Spanish.

I know how to study for and to successfully pass standardized tests. In addition to taking the SAT and LSAT, I passed three bar examinations, two that were among the most difficult in the country, on my first try. I say this to say that I know how to have a challenging educational goal, devise a plan to succeed at that goal and take the steps necessary to achieve that goal. I am energized by educational challenges, love to learn and receive great satisfaction from helping others achieve their educational goals.

Finally, I am a relaxed tutor that helps her students to relax. I have found this to be very important. It is not by tensing up and gritting one's teeth that one achieves optimal results. This type of composure does not free the student to be all that he or she can be. Hard work and smart work are of critical importance. There is no magic involved. At the same time, we know from a number of disciplines and extraordinary examples that being anxious, unreasonably nervous and downright tense does not make one's hard work the most effective. I am naturally driven to work hard at a task before me.

In closing, I draw from a number of experiences to inform how I relate to and connect with a student. My accomplishments demonstrate that I have learned what it means to work diligently and efficiently. Whatever your educational goal may be, it will be my task to help you achieve specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely results with respect to that goal.

I look forward to meeting you. Let the fun begin!

ESL/ESOL

I have a lot of experience teaching ESL/ESOL and currently teach it at a community college. I will use proven, research-based techniques to help you learn or improve your listening comprehension and clarity of American English speech. Individual speech sounds are emphasized throughout my tutoring sessions, and particular attention is paid to rhythm, stress, and intonation (this is true whether you are an absolute beginner or advanced English speaker).

Rhythm: Learning and practicing proper English rhythm is arguably the single most important element in clear English pronunciation.

Stress: Using proper word stress and word stress patterns is essential to the pronunciation of English words.

Intonation: Understanding what to emphasize and de-emphasize is critical to speech understandability.

At the outset, you will take a Listening Test and a Speaking Test. The former is important because how one hears English is closely connected with how one speaks. The description of the tests below applies to students of English who already know some English.

Listening Test: The test consists of seven short parts having roughly ten questions each. The parts evaluate how well you hear consonants, vowels, syllables, word stress, focus words, contractions and reductions, and thought groups.

Speaking Test: You will practice a short dialogue until you are comfortable with it. I will then record you, asking that you speak as naturally as possible. After evaluating your tape I will determine your Pronunciation Profile.

Your test results, along with your specific goals, will help me to fashion a highly effective program that is especially designed for you. Why you want to learn English will greatly inform what activities and exercises we will do. Based on all of the above, we will agree on a very specific Plan of Action that will spell out the following for our time together: goals, time, measures of success, and tracking of progress.

I look forward to meeting you!

French

Salut! I double majored in French and anthropology at Smith College. I spent my junior year abroad in France where I studied in Aix-en-Provence and then in Paris (La Sorbonne, SciencesPo and Paris V). I am a big proponent of studying abroad because I know how this experience enriched my life. Since graduating, I have continued to keep up my French. I used it while practicing law and while serving as a researcher for a human rights organization. (My country assignment required that I interview persons in French and write reports in French.)

In 2003, I received my teacher certification in French. In the process of receiving this certification, I taught French at Strath Haven High School in Wallingford, PA.

I love to teach and get along very well with young people. I have many resources from which to draw and know that speaking another language is fun.

I would love to hear from you. Whether you yourself want to learn, maintain or improve your French or whether you want the same for your child or another person, I can help.

Au revoir.

LSAT

I successfully took the LSAT and attended Columbia Law School. I then went on to pass three bar exams on the first try. I know what it takes to conquer the challenge of studying for and successfully taking the LSAT. I am a certified teacher and have over ten (10) years of experience in the area of education. I can help you come up with a specific game plan, I call it a Plan of Action, that will enable you to reach your goal.

TOEFL

I have been teaching a TOEFL prep course at Delaware County Community College for several semesters now. I have been able to help students from a variety of backgrounds, countries and cultures achieve their goals. There is a very systematic approach to preparing successfully for the TOEFL and I know how to cater that approach to take into account the particular strengths and weaknesses of each student. If you are willing and able to put in the time, I can definitely help you achieve success. Please don't hesitate to contact me.
Happy Studying!
