For the past year, I have been teaching chemistry and precalculus to special needs students at The Crefeld School in the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia. Students typically come to Crefeld because they struggle with executive functioning deficiencies along with various other learning disabilities that made it difficult for them to succeed in a traditional public school setting. The class sizes at Crefeld are very small allowing me to devote a lot of my time and energy differentiating my instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of my students.
Before teaching at The Crefeld School, I taught mathematics at the high school level for Springfield High School in Delaware County as a long term substitute. I also taught middle school math for two years and at the elementary level for the School District of Philadelphia for over two years.
In my seven years as a teacher, I have worked hard to develop my pedagogy. I am currently pursuing national teacher certification through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards which I plan to complete by June of 2013 and I participated in the Math and Science Partnership Grant (PA3-MSP) for the past two years through which I have received professional development by attending a three-day training session held at Goddard Space Flight Center, a 40-hour summer institute, and regional meetings throughout the school year to help me gain a deeper understanding of the content I teach.
