My name is John L. and I have been playing the violin for 18 years. Throughout these 18 years, I not only have learned the artistry and skills necessary to play the violin at a high level, but I also have learned the importance of mentors and their guidance. Without proper guidance and instruction, it would not be feasible for me to play the music that I hold so dear to my heart. Although I am a classically trained violinist, I love playing different genres of music and collaborating with all sorts of other musicians. The musical world has given me so much throughout the course of my life and I feel as though it is only right to continue the cycle of giving. I feel that it is very important for children to gain a good understanding of musical concepts at an early age. Based on my experiences as a musician, the saying that old habits die hard is quite prevalent in all aspects of music. Whether it is bow arm technique or proper posture or learning to read different clefs, the foundation of musical training starts at a very early age. I enjoy working with children of all ages and have spent a great amount of time working with children. Over the past three summers, I have been a counselor at Greenwood Music Camp, which is a magical chamber-music intensive place full of learning and community in the middle of the Berkshires. At Greenwood Music Camp, I work with children ranging from the ages of 13 to 18 years, assisting them in practice techniques and working with other group members. Chamber music is simply not feasible without the cooperation of multiple minds. It is a beautiful collaboration of musical ideas and expression. When done right, there are few things in the world that are more beautiful than chamber music. My goal during the five weeks of camp is to help young children understand the importance of community and help facilitate their understanding of the music that they play.
I feel that my experience as a counselor at Greenwood Music Camp has more than adequately prepared me to deal with teaching children violin/viola on a personal basis. I am a very patient individual and don't get irritated or upset easily. I love working with kids of all ages, including toddlers.
