As the Dean of Students at Albany Law School and an Academic Support Professor, I assisted teaching disabled (ADD/ADHD) students with effective note taking, outlining and exam strategies. For students with ADD/ADHD, it is imperative that they understand their cognitive style and "play to their strengths." In some instances, students with ADD/ADHD may have to spend *more time* preparing for class, exams, and papers. With careful planning, however, students can learn how to effectively manage their schedule in a way that reflects their unique learning style.

Bar Exam

I took the NYS Bar Exam successfully in 1987. During my three years as an Assistant Dean of Students at a Law School, I served as an Academic Support Instructor. As such, I assisted law students in a broad range of skills designed to prepare them for the bar exam including the following: time management; essay questions; test taking strategies; and writing.

Career Development

I have over 15 years of experience in providing career counseling to undergraduate and law students. My approach is comprehensive and proactive and includes the following: resume review, assistance with cover letter writing, networking skills, assistance with identifying potential opportunities, and coaching.

I studied for and took the Praxis English and Special Education Tests and received a 194 and 184 respectively on both tests.

Since then, I have provided individualized tutoring to new teachers who are studying for both English and/or Special Education. My approach includes having students do diagnostics; practice tests; and tutoring.

Study Skills

1) Time Management. To succeed academically and professionally, requires us all to learn time management skills. Many students do not realize how many hours or preparation and study are required to optimize their performance. As a former dean of students and Academic Support Professor, I have provided workshops, courses and individualized counseling to students on how to effectively manage their time. Typically I begin with an assessment of how students currently spending your time -- e.g. how many hours in class? how many hours reading? In addition, I conduct an assessment of students' learning style in order to assist in identifying optimal study methods, times and conditions. Thereafter, we will create a weekly schedule which will enable students to effectively manage their time.

In the humanities and social sciences, students are often required to read voluminous amounts of material on a daily basis. It is imperative that students develop strong reading skills that will enable them to internalize material at a deep level, sufficient to prepare them for classes and exams. Effective reading requires active engagement in the text, recursive reading, note-taking and review. Through this tutorial students will learn how to improve their reading speed and comprehension.

Many students underestimate the time required for preparing for an examination. At the college level, examinations often test materials that may not have covered in class and/or in the textbook. Therefore, adequate preparation for exams requires a thorough review of notes, outlines, and reading; effective outlining strategies; and intensive review of materials. This tutorial is designed to assist students in strategizing about how to best approach exam preparation including allotting the appropriate amount of time for each aspect of exam preparation and ongoing review of the material.
