My name is Keaira and I would love to be your tutor! I have a large pool of experience to call upon, experience that will make a difference to your future academic success.
I started tutoring when I was in middle school. My first student suffered from ADD and was failing 3rd grade vocabulary. I worked with him twice a week for a half hour. After one month, he was passing the class; within four months, he had an A- average.
In high school, I tutored my friends in trigonometry and algebra and even tutored the parent of a classmate in chemistry.
I attended Dartmouth College and majored in Engineering modified with digital arts. While at Dartmouth, I lead peer study groups for calculus BC, vector-variable calculus and numerous other engineering classes. I was also a teaching assistant in the Russian department.
After college, I took a position as a math teacher with the Philadelphia School District. I have taught Algebra 1, Geometry, Pre-calculus, and Algebra 2.
While with the Philadelphia School District, I re-wrote curriculums for Geometry, Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 to incorporate remedial skills and enrichment for the students in my classroom. As a result of my work, students at my school scoring proficient or advanced on standardized tests increased from 5% to nearly 50%.
I have worked in both classroom settings and one-on-one with advanced students, students with learning disabilities, and students who spoke English as a second language. I believe all students can succeed given time, motivation, and instruction that meets their individual needs.
My tutoring methods vary based on the needs of each student.
Struggling with a specific class? Bring me your recent work, tests and/or quizzes, and your textbook and we will work through specific problems and concepts so that you will see immediate improvement in your grades and academic proficiency.
Preparing for a standardized test/course you haven't taken yet? I will give you a diagnostic or practice test which we will review together to identify the areas where you might struggle. We will then create personalized study plan to help you get past whatever is blocking you from success.
Didn't do well in a class and need to retake it? We will work through course material at a slower pace. I will provide you with detailed explanations of the material, alternate math models, problem solving strategies, and memory tricks to help you succeed. I have helped others learn, I can help you.
