M. Ed. offering tutoring in all elementary subjects

Hello! I'm currently a third grade lead teacher in a Philadelphia charter school. I have my Master's in Elementary Education and have my PA certification for grades K-6. I also have my Middle School 7-9 Science and Middle School 7-9 English certifications.

I became a teacher because I love watching my students succeed. I use many different methods to ensure that my students are having fun while learning, including guided reading, small groups, centers, manipulatives, and creative projects. I have a large collection of children's books (at all elementary levels) that I use for reading studies, as well as 100+ math centers that utilize many different math skills in a game or "real-life" scenario.

Vocabulary

I currently teach my third grade class an additional challenging 10 vocabulary words a week; they successful use the words in their daily conversations by developing student-friendly definitions, acting out meanings, use in authentic texts, and utilizing context clues.

Grammar

I am extremely knowledgeable about English grammar and have taught grammar in a classroom setting for 2 years.

Reading

I am experienced in teaching many reading strategies using mentor texts and guided reading. I have worked with below, on, and above level readers and have had great success with quickly increasing DRA levels throughout the year.

Writing

I have been teaching elementary writing for three years and use the Writer's Workshop model. I have taught everything from descriptive writing to informative/instruction writing to expository writing and employ the use of mentor texts to model different writing techniques.

English

Literature

I received a score of 790 on my SAT reading test in 2005. I also received a score of 192 on the Praxis English 7-9 test (which requires in depth reading comprehension and grammar skills). The passing/average score is 163. I have read the many of the classic novels required of most high school and basic college classes.

SAT Reading

Elementary Science

I have a strong background in environmental sciences and had a leadership role in constructing an off-the-grid structure through S.A.V.E. I have been trained in inquiry based science instruction and am familiar with almost all elementary FOSS science material, but am particularly strong with rocks and minerals, plant life, insects, and sound.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am currently a PA K-6 certified third grade teacher. I have my Master's in Elementary Education from Temple University. I have taught second and third grades, but have experience with all elementary grades K-6. I am very experienced in guided reading for both above level and below level readers. I am also a great math teacher, and have developed numerous math centers as a way to practice math skills (everything from addition to decimals).

Phonics

I have taught phonics skills for three years (second and third grade).

Praxis

I passed all sections of the Praxis. My scores were:

Praxis Middle School English score: 192 (Passing = 163)
Praxis Middle School Science score: 169 (Passing = 144)
Praxis Elementary Education: 190 (Passing = 168)
Praxis Content Knowledge: 187 (Passing = 150)
