I am passionate about the French language and want to share what I know. I recently graduated from Penn State University with a minor in French and Francophone studies. There, I took and tutored for classes in basic, intermediate and advanced French, as well as in literature, writing and translation.

I have been studying the French language since 8th grade. I have also studied abroad in Montreal, Canada with the Lingua Worldwide program and in Poitiers, France, with distant relatives.

My approach to tutoring is, after assessing a student's level of proficiency, to target the student's interests. If she likes to read, we read books written in dual languages. If he likes to talk about the outdoors, we spend time learning vocabulary about that subject.

I find tutoring students who are motivated to learn and curious about the subject matter a rewarding activity that enriches my own linguistic experience as well as the student's. I look forward to meeting students and helping them to learn the French language!

In addition to French, I am pleased to offer my students tutoring in additional subject matter that they may have questions with, such as biology and writing.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I passed both intro to Biology, Microbiology, and Anatomy & Physiology on the dean's list in college. I can offer tutoring in a wide range of subjects, including the photosynthetic cycle, immunology, metabolism, and biology's connections with chemistry.

Economics

My degree option was Environmental and Economic policy, and classes in economics heavily informed my degree. I am able to tutor both introductory and intermediate levels of micro and macroeconomics.

French

I have a minor in French from Penn State University. I've been studying French at home since I was 13 and in school since 8th grade. In college, I tutored beginner and intermediate French students. I also have experience studying abroad in Montreal and France.

Geography

I have a minor in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from Penn State. I am familiar with everything from basic geography to more advanced concepts of spatial data analysis.

Sewing

I have been sewing for years, both as a hobby and professionally. I started in Girl Scouts, then helped to costume the casts of several high school and middle school musicals. I worked as a tailor and for a rock climbing gear company as a seamstress.

Writing

Writing an essential part of communication in today's world. From organizing 5-paragraph themes to help citing research for your thesis, I can help you improve your writing!

Most young people have spent nearly their entire lives in school. In high school and college, I remember itching to get out into the "real world." Days before I graduated, my college roommate asked me "Are you excited to become a 'real person'?" I reject this notion that being in school is not the "real world". I think it is critical to remember that pursuing an... read more

WyzAnt's poll question this week was "What is the most important question for a parent to ask a tutor before hiring" My answer was that a parent should ask about what strategies the tutor will teach the student so that he or she can become a better independent studier. Thanks to a friend of mine for showing me how to edit pictures and create JPEGs in PowerPoint and iPhoto. What a simple way to combine the editing features of these programs! Especially useful for those of us who don't have Photoshop.
