I am a recent graduate of the University of the Arts, with a BFA in Theater Arts focusing in set design and scenic painting. I also tutored through the university during the school year for the scene and lighting technology class. For that class I taught students vocabulary, knot tying, exam preparation methods, and certain equations having to do with carpentry and electricity. Although I went to school for art, I also work very well with children. I grew up in a big family full of children, and even taught my niece how to multiply.
For elementary school students, I recognize that each student has a different way of learning. Once I see the way a student understands things, I gear my tutoring sessions towards explaining the material in a way they can best understand it. For example, some students absorb material better when they visualize what they are learning, so I draw little doodles to help explain the idea. I also use a lot of mnemonic devices to help students remember vocabulary that they may be having trouble with. I always make sure that each student leaves the session with a sense of accomplishment and a better understanding of the material that we covered.
For art students, I teach by showing examples, and then having the student work on their own. Many aspects of art require practice, but the student needs to be shown the methods before they can practice, so they know what to do. I also let the student explore on their own because there are usually very many ways of doing something to get the same results. By exploring, the student can find the methods they are most comfortable with, to generate the best outcome.
I have taken 2 years of art history class (once in high school and once in college) and have also taken an intensive history of costume and decor class, which focused on architecture and clothing of each era.
I have taken several drawing classes as an art student, including: Drawing and Rendering, Sketching and Drawing for Scenery and Costume, and Figure Drawing. Depending on what the student needs to draw, I will teach them by showing them how to break down objects into smaller shapes, and give them exercises in perspective and shading.
I have owned a Macbook pro for over four years, and am familiar with all the software that comes with them like Safari, Preview, iPhoto, iMovie, pages and more. I am also great at troubleshooting with things that go wrong with macs, because I have had mine for so long and have had several issues that I learned how to fix myself. I can also teach how to type fast using the asdf jkl; method.
I have experience with oils, acrylics, watercolor, and scenic painting including color mixing with latex paint, off Broadway paint, tints and dyes and trompe l'oeil, and have taken several classes for each of these mediums. There is a different method to painting with each medium, and depending on the student's skill level, we can start with the basics, or work on more advanced projects.
I have been sewing by hand since I was a little girl. I have been sewing by machine since high school. I am familiar with using a serger and pattern making as well. I have also worked in a professional costume shop doing alterations.
As a Theatre Design and Technology major, my focus is not in acting, but in design and technical theatre. I have taken several classes in script analysis, theatre history, set design, costume design, drafting, model making, and technical direction. Depending on what the student wants to learn, I can focus on looking at a script from a conceptual point of view, or aspects of technical theatre like vocabulary one needs to know going into theatre, or designing and drawing for theatre.
