I am a semi-retired teacher who is extremely passionate about ensuring every student learns to read and write, no matter their age. I taught as a professional teacher and certified Reading Specialist in the Philadelphia public school system for over 35 years. I have also been privately tutoring individuals and small groups for over 12 years. During that time, I have specialized in tutoring students in reading, phonics, writing, English, and English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL/ESOL). In addition, over the past few years, I have focused primarily on pre-K education.

My experience and expertise has helped me develop tried-and-true methodologies to enable students to hone their reading and writing skills. I am a lifelong teacher who truly enjoys helping people accomplish their goals and feel more confident in their own, independent abilities. I strongly believe that everyone should have the ability to read and communicate their needs and desires. My goal is to use my unique skills and experience to ensure they are able to achieve this.

Although there are many qualified tutors on WyzAnt, I believe my experience, patience, and passion are what set me apart. I never give up on students and always help them demand more of themselves so they can realize their full potential. I realize each student has a different learning style and pace. As a tutor, I tailor my lessons to those individualized needs. I also am very committed to making my lessons as interactive and fun as possible. This helps students of all ages stay focused and motivated. It is very important to me that I do everything I can to ensure my students enjoy my lessons so that they look forward to learning the concepts. This fosters increased retention and independent skill development, which is essential for students to truly grow.

Whether you are the parent of a pre-K or elementary school student, or an adult who seeks to improve your English skills, I am committed to helping you and look forward to working with you to accomplish your goals.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a certified Elementary School teacher for over 35 years. I was a classroom teacher in the School District of Philadelphia for several years, teaching reading, language arts, math, science, social studies, and health. I taught third, fourth, and fifth grades during that time. I got a Master's Degree in the teaching of reading and subsequently became a Reading Specialist, where I spent most of my full time, active career. During this time, I also took 60 graduate credits past the Master's Degree in various education subjects and attended numerous workshops to learn more about effective teaching.

After retiring from full time teaching, I returned to the School District of Philadelphia as a substitute. I have been subbing in various grades in elementary schools for 11 years. Some of the grades I've worked with during that time were kindergarten, first, second, and third grades. I've done long assignments of three weeks or more in kindergarten and second grade. If you need any more information about my experience, and credentials, please let me know.

Phonics

As a trained, certified, and experienced Reading Specialist, I have been teaching and using phonics to help students learn to read words for decades. Learning to sound out words helps students acquire more reading vocabulary. Phonics involves beginning, middle and ending consonant and consonant blends, digraphs, etc. It also teaches sounds of vowels, vowel digraphs and vowel diphthongs. By blending sounds together, people are often able to read many words that they have not read before. Working with common rhyming word endings is also helpful.

Using context clues along with phonics clues really helps people decode new words as they read passages. For example, if a student is reading a passage about zoo animals, if the name of an animal begins with z, if he knows the sound of z, he wouldn't say "monkey". He would likely say "zebra", even if has never seen that word before.

Reading for new readers can often be challenging and intimidating. To complicate matters further, many of my non-traditional students and parents of young children often ask me how to "teach" reading without simply reading something first and having a student mimic what is read for them. The short answer is: it is definitely possible to teach new readers to become independent readers... read more
