In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Vince first approached music as a performer. In lessons, he soon began improvising melodies based on the lesson materials. Improvisation is a form of spontaneous composing; composing in real time. As he expanded his trumpet technique and reading skills, Vince began writing his improvisations on paper, thus becoming compositions that could be performed again. Vince's composition exploded when he began to study music theory. He later took formal composition lessons with Vinnie Martucci and John B Hedges. Vince continually composes new music and has developed a distinct voice through composition. Vince has composed music for many genres including jazz, classical, rock, and pop.
The arrangement of a composition is as important as the composition itself. A good arrangement can make a big difference on how an audience will receive the work. Vince's early compositions were written and arranged for his friends to play on their instruments. As Vince's knowledge of other instruments expanded, he began arranging for instruments based on the instruments' character and how they combined with other instruments. Vince has arranged for many professional bands and particularly specializes in jazz and commercial horn sections. He has also arranged for many instrumentations including solos, duets, jazz combos, piano trios, string quartets, brass quintets, big bands, symphonic bands, and orchestras.
Vince will help identify and develop aspiring composers' unique voice. With his theoretical background combined with his knowledge of many instruments, Vince will teach how to approach composing music from different perspectives. He will also teach various ways arrange and re-arrange compositions for different instrumentations. Vince will develop the students preferences for instruments and help explore conventional and unconventional, imaginative orchestrations. Vince teaches trumpet for all skill levels.
Although he is excellent at reading music, Vince has an even stronger ear; which attributes to his aptitude for learning multiple instruments. By studying & performing jazz, he's developed his ear and expanded his communication. He studied sight singing and ear training with Ottman's Music for Sight Singing book - perhaps the most essential, popular text for ear training. Vince also employs his ear by transcribing music for the bands' of which he is a member.
Ear training is important for every musician regardless of instrument. Vince will teach how to recognize the elements of music including rhythms, intervals, melody, harmony, scales, and form. He will demonstrate how proper ear training contributes to practical situations. Vince teaches ear training for all skill levels.
I attended college at the State University of New York at New Paltz and earned a B.S. in Music. I concentrated in Jazz Studies and Theory & Composition. Although I primarily play trumpet, I also play piano, guitar, and have a working knowledge of other instruments. I read music and can identify pitches by ear in context.
Currently, I am finishing my graduate studies at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia pursuing a master's degree in Music.
Vince briefly took guitar lessons in 2001, but soon favored exploring the instrument independently. At the time Vince had been studying trumpet for four years, and applied what he learned about music to the guitar. Vince is largely a self taught guitarist, having transcribed many rock and folk songs. As an undergraduate, he qualified for and enrolled in a graduate level guitar course taught by Mark Dziuba which rounded Vince's playing. Vince also attended master classes held by John Abercrombie and Pat Martino. Vince has played lead and rhythm guitar on many recordings and with live bands.
Vince has a firm grip on chords and scales on the guitar. He can play electric and acoustic guitars, plus slide guitar, and with guitar effects pedals. Vince teaches guitar for beginner through intermediate skill levels.
Vince began playing electric bass in 2002. He approached the instrument shortly after picking up the guitar. Vince is largely self taught, having transcribed many rock songs and by applying music theory to electric bass. Vince considers bass as a melodic instrument. He has recorded and performed on bass primarily for rock oriented music. Vince teaches bass for beginner through intermediate skill levels.
Vince studied music history from the Age of Antiquity up through modern music. He is quite familiar with the music of the Western World and its composers, as well as American music like Jazz and Rock. When writing a stylized piece of music, Vince often re-researches the particular style.
Vince is an Audio Engineer and Producer in the Philadelphia region. He primarily engineers and produces radio & TV commercials, while also engineering and producing original artists' music during the recent two years. Vince has seven years experience operating analog and digital sound boards for live events, radio, and in recording studios. He has also managed multiple semi-professional Jazz ensembles; in charge of scheduling rehearsals, booking performances, negotiating with venues, and marketing via web, print and social media.
Vince began using recording software in 2003; and was first introduced to Pro Tools 5 in 2005. He has kept up with each new addition including the current Pro Tools 11. Throughout college, Vince enrolled in formal recording courses that featured Pro Tools. As a professional audio engineer, he has used Pro Tools daily for the recent two years. Plus, he records exclusively with Pro Tools and even produced his debut album Syzygy solely with Pro Tools.
Vince has used Pro Tools in tandem with many different digital interfaces including the M-Box series, Digi002 and Digi003 consoles, and C24 control surface. Vince is also knowledgeable of digital plug-ins developed by Advanced Instrument Research (AIR) and Waves. Pro Tools will also work with most analog gear.
In addition to Pro Tools, Vince is familiar with Audacity, Garage Band, Digital Performer, and Logic.
Vince was first introduced to music theory when he began playing trumpet and reading music. He learned the basics such as notes, scales, triads, key signatures, and time signatures, from the perspective as a performer. Later (especially when he started studying guitar and piano) Vince studied intervals, more exotic scales, and chord progressions. At college and graduate school, he formally studied advanced music theory as applied to tonal harmony, twentieth century music, and jazz.
Often, theories are built upon other theories and thus support each other. Vince can teach the basics and some of the most advanced theoretical concepts to any musician regardless of instrument. He will teach to theories and how they can be successfully deployed in practice. Vince teaches music theory for all skill levels.
Vince began playing piano and organ by ear in 2002. Throughout college, he took formal piano classes including classical, jazz, and keyboard harmony. Vince was even featured on piano recitals. Most recently, he appeared on his self-produced album Syzygy (released 2014), on which he performed all the keyboard parts.
Although piano is very much a secondary instrument, Vince has a solid technical foundation. He is best suited to teach beginner piano, focusing on technique, reading, and two hand coordination. Vince also plays related keyboard based instruments including the synthesizer and melodica. Vince teaches piano for the beginner skill level.
I studied sight singing in college from Robert Ottman's book, "Music for Sight Singing". I can sing rhythms, intervals, chords, and musical passages at sight. I actively sight read music for the trumpet.
As his primary instrument, Vince began playing trumpet in 1998. He took lessons provided by his elementary school. Vince advanced rapidly, quickly winning principle chair in school ensembles and later with select county and state wide bands. He participated in many solo competitions performing classical and jazz trumpet throughout middle and high school.
In 2003, Vince began studying classical trumpet privately with Mark Klose then later with John Maguda. Vince studied many of the classic methods including Arban's Complete Conservatory Method, Schlossberg's Daily Drills and Technical Studies, Clarke's Technical Studies, and Stamp's Warm-Ups & Studies. Vince also studied solo repertoire by Hindemith, Haydn, and Kennan among others.
While cultivating the classical foundation, Vince focused on jazz trumpet. He listened, transcribed, and studied many of the jazz trumpet greats including Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, and Maynard Ferguson. Vince studied jazz trumpet through undergraduate and graduate school with Rebecca Coupe Franks, Dennis Wasko, and John Swana.
Vince is a strong improviser, which lends well to the rock scene. He is a frequent performer with cover and original bands. In the recording studio, Vince often lends his horns to a wide variety of genres including pop, indie, surf-rock, ambient, and soul.
Vince is an all around trumpet player and soloist; he also plays other brass instruments including flugelhorn, cornet, slide trumpet, and mellophone. Vince teaches trumpet for all skill levels.
