In the field of education, I have worked with students in public, private, and charter schools, as well as performed a large amount of one-on-one and special needs clinical work. In the NYC public school system, I have managed a 4th grade classroom and was responsible for Math, Literacy, and Social Studies units. I have also worked in a 3rd grade classroom at a very diverse private school in Manhattan. Given the community based nature of the school, I spent time in almost every classroom pre K-6. With the Literacy Team, I focused more on individual students and balanced reading groups. I took part in parent, administrative, and support team meetings. Many of these students had a wide array of special needs, and personalized intervention was often needed.
I also performed assessments and screenings on many of the students, and found great success using the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading instruction. I most recently worked at an NYC charter school in several elementary classrooms. I am also working as a Literacy Specialist at a private tutoring and educational consulting company.
In all of these settings, I do my best to incorporate creative projects, exercises, and discussion into my lessons in order to facilitate a better understanding of the material and the world around them. I also use a wide variety of technologies in order to access all the senses and make the lessons applicable to the students’ lives.
