Mary Frances’s qualifications in specific subjects below.
Bible Studies
I have been in a Catholic school my entire life, from Pre-K to today in college. I am familiar with Bible stories and teachings and since I have been brought up with them being drilled into my head, I even want to and can read Bible studies as an English major and take them as stories as opposed to as a Catholic. However, I am religious and am very familiar with my faith (Catholic Christian). I can take Bible studies from both a bias and unbiased perspective.
English
I am an English major and am constantly writing and editing. I love grammar and everything involved in English as a subject.
Grammar
I have been highly proficient in grammar my entire life. It even gets to the point where my friends even know that if they make a mistake, they change it before I can correct them. I believe grammar is important because employees can be deterred if you have the qualifications but then hold yourself to such an uneducated sounding esteem.
Literature
Since English is my major in college, I am reading constantly and, therefore, I am familiar in explicated poems and understanding literature.
Proofreading
I would love to be an editor. I have always edited my friends' and family's papers or presentations. This school year (2011-2012) I have edited two Senior Seminars (a big presentation of about 20 pages) for friends and they have done well, in the end. I currently freelance as an online editor.
Public Speaking
I was and still am a very shy person. I have become more out going and confident, though. I know how a presentation, in terms of public speaking, should sound. There should be good eye contact, minimal "ums" and "likes". It has been drilled into my head from everyone (teachers, parents, etc.) in my life.
Reading
My reading skills are the same as reading literature. Reading comprehension has become second nature to me due to the fact that I am constantly reading or explicating a story or poem for class or even for fun in my spare time. Reading is great and I will pass that love of reading down to whomever I tutor.
Spelling
Spelling always came naturally, as did pronouncing words correctly. Words being pronounced incorrectly was always a pet peeve of mine so I try my best to learn how to properly say things. Also, my vocabulary is big and I read a book called 1000 Most Important Words in the English Language, so I may broaden my vocabulary. Reading that books helps because I also note the spelling and try to use the words in my everyday life.
Study Skills
I think studying should be fun. It can all depend on the subject but there are fun ways to study, which I believe teachers should teach in school. There are word plays, and jeopardy-like games that can be incorporated into studying. I know games and correlations to other words, events, songs, shows, etc. have helped me a lot.
Vocabulary
I believe it is important to have a wide vocabulary. I find myself reading 1000 Most Important Words in the English Language. It helps me broaden my vocabulary. Also, I like to think of fun ways to help me remember the definitions.
