Hey I'm Derek! I am great with kids, high school and college students, and have my fair share of tutoring 40+ students. I am currently taking a few classes at community college of Philadelphia but have a flexible schedule in between and am available to begin tutoring immediately in any of the following subjects: biology, microbiology/virology, cell physiology, biochemistry, physics, general and organic chemistry. I live next to the art museum and can easily meet for tutoring at the free library, CCP or students homes that are within the feasible limits of public transportation. I can also tutor via Skype to accommodate out students outside of Pennsylvania.
A little bit about me and my experience...
I was a cum laude graduate with a B.S. in cell & molecular biology, minor in chemistry and minor in studio art (drawing concentration). I have over a year of professional tutoring experience in the biological sciences. As a student at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, supplemental instruction is offered by the university's tutoring center.
Classes selected for tutoring were those that have a DFW (on average students taking the class receive a D or F grade or withdraw from the course) rate of 30% or higher. Tutors are hired students that have received an A grade in the course and have maintained at least a 3.0. After receiving a grant, the tutoring center had an opening in for BIO 110-a major only biology course and lab with about 300 students per class. I applied for the new position and was the only student selected to tutor the class. As a new tutor I was responsible for attending summer training and weekly training sessions to attain level 1 certification. I also attended biweekly meetings with my supervisor in addition to attending the class. Tutoring sessions lasted 50 minutes and had up to 4 students per section. Students were required to come prepared with topics for discussion and I would facilitate the group learning through sample questions and drawn-out explanations on the board. To ensure the quality of the tutoring center and certification, a supervisor and other tutors also observed me periodically. I would also hold extra review sessions for my students before a test to help with any last minute questions.
I have a great personality and sense of humor as well as a significant amount of leadership experience. I was an orientation leader, student ambassador, certified student leader and biology tutor at West Chester University.
With a half of a semester at Drexel University College of Medicine, I gained a lot of practical studying skills that I would be more than happy to pass along!
