I recently completed a M.A. in Mathematics, and am in the process of completing a M.S. in Applied Statistics. Last year, I was a graduate assistant tutoring students in math, statistics, and computers. I have over 10 years of IT experience in Unix systems and network administration, which included mentoring senior and junior system/network admins. As an undergrad, I have a B.S. in Chemistry-Biology with a minor in Music, and a B.A. in Mathematics with minors in Physics and German. My career goal is to become a college professor, so being attentive to students' needs is a genuine concern of mine. I welcome students of all levels and backgrounds and I look forward to being of assistance with their studies.
I received a minor in music as an undergraduate with an overall GPA of 3.67 in music classes. In general, I received A's for the pieces I composed. I have also used MIDI sequencers to compose on computers, including arranging large pieces from orchestral scores.
I received a minor in music as an undergraduate with an overall GPA of 3.67 in music classes. I have experience with voice and piano, and music theory, analysis, and composition. Unfortunately, an auto accident has resulted in nerve damage in my hands, so I am not able to play well anymore, however, I received my piano lessons from professors who graduated from Juilliard. I have passed the certification exam for music theory on WyzAnt.
In addition to undergraduate general genetics, I have also taken graduate courses in molecular genetics and recombinant DNA/genetic engineering using the protocols in Cold Spring Harbor's "Molecular Cloning".
The professors from whom I took these courses stated in letters of recommendation that I was the best student in the classes. My GPA in these courses was 3.8 overall.
I have experience tutoring 2 students in linear algebra. Both were masters degree students, one in mathematics education, and one in physics. I received grades of A in both undergraduate and graduate level courses in linear algebra, and also in multivariate calculus.
I have administered Linux boxes since 1997, covering a number of distributions. Currently my desktops and laptops all run Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, with Ubuntu Studio 10.04 in a vm on one. I received an A in CSC 586 - Systems Administration and Security with a 100% average.
I received a minor in music as an undergraduate with an overall GPA of 3.67 in music classes. I took Music History by exam, and received a B, achieved entirely by self-study and prior knowledge. My main interest is in the major periods of Baroque, Classical, and Romantic, however, I have recently spent some time considering more modern works. I particularly like Schoenberg's "Structural Functions of Harmony" as an exposition of the development of musical structure during the last two hundred fifty years.
I have worked with LAN/WAN networking for 15 years. While working for UUNET, I took the basic and advanced network training given to their NOC engineers, and although not Cisco certified, I have worked with their equipment, and own several 2509s, 4700Ms, and 1900 series switches. I set up the network architecture for the hubs we ran in Tokyo, and I worked with the allocation of network address space for the customer-facing servers in several other hubs. Additionally, I have experience in sockets programming in C and Perl, and I have worked extensively with the major networking protocols.
I received grades of A+ (98%+ average) in Organic Chemistry I and II. I also scored in the 98th percentile on the American Chemical Society standardized exam in Organic Chemistry. The professors in each class stated in their letters of recommendation that I was probably the best student they had in their careers.
I have been programming in PERL since 1997. In that time, I have worked on many production-level programs using the language, including: sockets programming, DBI to multiple databases (including embedded SQL), CGI and dynamic web pages, Apache modules, and all sorts of utility programs. In my capacity as senior system administrator and team lead for Worldcom, I used it on a daily basis. It is by far my favorite language.
UNIX is my preferred OS, and I have been using it since 1994. For several years, I was a senior system administrator and team-lead for Worldcom. In that capacity, among other things, I was responsible for maintaining and building the OS source for BSD/OS and Solaris. I currently use Ubuntu linux as the OS for my desktops and laptops, but I have vms running Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris. Over the years, I have also worked with IRIX and SunOS 4.1.X.
