I'm a career changer--from publishing to middle school teacher--and the idea to become a teacher came to me after my experience of volunteer tutoring. From my first day at the center, I loved the personal interaction with students and the feeling that I could share some of knowledge and myself with my students. Now I get to do that every day, and I enjoy it so much I still want to tutor individually!
The majority of my teaching/tutoring experience involves English literature and writing, skills that are supported by my background in editing and publishing. But my true love is history. I was a history minor and am a general history buff, so I'd love more chances to share that with students. I take a slightly unorthodox approach in that I try to learn as much while tutoring as the students are learning. If I need to spend an evening constructing a flowchart of American political parties so that the student and I can both be fluent in the topic, so be it! I'm looking forward to getting more experience with a variety of topics and learning styles to become even more successful as a tutor and teacher.
