Sometimes classrooms just can't provide the one-on-one attention you need to excel. Learning doesn't have to be dull or life-sucking like it is in many schools. Perhaps you're ready to make a change in your own life and need a little help to get started. Tutoring can help you hone your skills or to catch up in areas of weakness, and I'm eager to help!
While I have successfully tutored students in many subjects, I consider myself first and foremost a teacher of writing. I obsess over grammar - when I take a beach vacation, I always treat myself to a grammar book to read in the sun. I'm kind of nerdy like that. I don't just teach my students what's "right" and "wrong" in regard to grammar. Instead, we study how the language works. My goal is to help my students become lifelong writers (and readers), not only to master a test.
Areas of instruction include:
SAT Critical Reading
GRE Quantitative Reasoning
GRE Analytical Writing
Praxis English Subject Area
Reading and writing skills
College application essays
Algebra I and II
I am uniquely qualified as a tutor. I've earned a Ph.D. in Reading, Writing and Literacy from the University of Pennsylvania. Not only do I have hundreds of hours of tutoring experience, but I am also certified in both English AND Math (a very rare qualification). I hold Pennsylvania Level II teaching certifications in English 7-12, Math 7-12, and Health K-12. Additionally, I was two classes away from getting a B.S. in general science.
Standardized test prep is a huge industry. Many of my students have tried several centers and packaged systems before beginning with me, and I often hear them say that they've never learned like this before and that my advice is perfect for their unique needs. When I work with you, I'm not following a scripted curriculum. Instead, I'm evaluating your particular strengths and weaknesses and developing *your* strategy to get you the highest score possible. Heather is a wonderful, talented teacher. My son wanted to increase his Math and Critical Reading SAT scores. He and Heather worked well together right from the start. Heather is very thorough and was genuinely happy when he understood the material. She is very friendly and professional. My son enjoyed studying with Heather very much. In just a few weeks of working with Heather his scores went up significantly. We would highly recommend Heather to everyone!
Heather has been very great my son. In the beginning he struggled with most the reading section and part of the SAT questions. The time he has spent with Heather has helped him to understand and prepare himself the for upcoming SAT. My son talks about how much he enjoys his sessions with Heather and feel she is very patient.
Love working with Heather. Learning a lot with her, and find her methods very effective. She is definitely someone that I would highly recommend.
Heather makes tutoring sessions fun because she comes at it with both super math and reading skills but also high level psychological tools. She is able to suss out where one might get stuck in academic process as well as in psychological blocks. Her ability to address both, makes it a positive experience of removing the obstacles in order to get to the desired goals!
Heather is really helping my 17 year old gain confidence as he preps for ACTs. He is learning strategies for solving problems, and also getting a sense of how much he actually knows. Huge help!
I'm retaking the GRE and needed a tutor to help me prepare for the new format of the test and the Math section in particular. Beyond being a great tutor, Heather is first and foremost a teacher. She is very personable and knowledgeable (big plus that she's certified in *both* English AND Math!) It is obvious that she diligently and carefully prepares before every session to make it engaging and tailored towards my needs. She also provides resources outside of the main test prep book for more practice. I appreciated that during our first session she mentioned that she didn't want to just prepare me for a test but to work on skills that I could use in and outside of the classroom. She embraces her role in not only being a tutor but a supportive and encouraging counselor and teacher as well. I highly recommend Heather!
This is our first time working with your tutoring company. Our selection Heather was from another student who recommended Heather and we are very happy with her work with my daughter. I will continue to praise your company to everyone. Thank you.
Heather tutored my daughter the summer before my daughter started her senior year in high school. She had been struggling with math her junior year and I knew we would need outside help for her senior year. While in Philadelphia for the summer we used Heather's services and while it was a short period, Heather helped my daughter to focus more on her education and to become more serious about academics in general and math in specific.
We tried to continue the sessions online when we returned to DE for the school year, but that was too difficult, so I found a tutor in Dover, DE. However, Heather really was an effective tutor and source to show my daughter the possibilities if she applies herself.
Heather worked with my daughter to help her prepare for the ACT. Her relaxed, friendly style of instruction, established immediate rapport and helped my daughter to build her confidence level. If you are seeking a tutor who has strong expertise in math, English and test taking tactics, then you want to contact Heather.
Heather is very patient. I was so overwhelmed in where to start with the material. She simplified the content and had clear examples. Heather has crafted the art of tutoring. Thank you Heather!
Being an older student getting back to school is tough, but Heather always helps me gain ground in our sessions. I always walk out with an understanding of the material I was struggling with and an ability to retain the information. I have an exam to take today and my confidence in my understanding of the material that will be covered has improved tenfold. Yesterday I was thinking I would get an F. After last night's session, I know I am getting an A.
I came to Heather needing help studying for the Praxis 1 combined test. I especially needed help in the Math and Writing sections. Heather did a fantastic job of pinpointing my weaknesses and turning them into strengths in literally minutes!! She was not out for my money either. She gave me a ton of practice I could do on my own time so I was able to come to her with specific questions. That way my actual paid time was as beneficial as humanly possible!!
Heather is a very smart woman and on top of that she is great with people. She is easy to get along with and did a great job of communicating her knowledge over to me. She is not only great at answering questions, but also at asking the right ones that helped me retain information more efficiently.
I highly recommend Heather!! She is a great tutor and every bit of the reason I passed the Praxis with ease!!
My daughter had Heather tutor her for her PSAT prep. My daughter liked Heather right from the start and knew that they would work well together. Heather is a very good tutor. She is very patient, but also gets the students to accomplish a lot of work. I would absolutely use Heather again or recommend her to anyone who is looking for an excellent tutor.
Heather is an excellent tutor and I would highly recommend her to anyone. I am an adult learner returning back to college and needed help in re-familiarizing myself in the areas of algebra, grammar, and chemistry. Heather was very patient and understanding and willing go as fast or slow as I needed her too. During our sessions she took the time to breakdown and review both general and basic concepts of my problem areas and willing to stay with that subject until I felt confident in moving forward. Although Heather’s fee was a little pricier than other tutors, I quickly learned she is not only very skillful and qualified but she also worth every penny.
My son had his first tutoring session with Heather this week. He really liked her and found her very helpful he said actually teaches better than his school teacher! I would highly recommend Heather
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have spent years working with high school students on their plans for the future, including preparing for college admissions interviews and drafting short answers and essays for application. My students often hear that their application essays stand out from the pack. I deeply enjoy helping students pick the best university for their learning and career goals. I have Pennsylvania Level II teaching certifications in English 7-12, Math 7-12, and Health K-12.
I am fascinated by English grammar and invest time each year in learning more about it. I teach master's level grammar courses but am able to break concepts down so that even young students grasp them. I help students understand the fluidity of English grammar and guide them to understand grammar beyond worksheets. I use grammar to help my students read complex texts more effectively and efficiently, as well as to construct sentences that are clearer and more sophisticated.
For several years, I have been working with students on the verbal section of the MCAT. In lessons, we talk about how to approach the most challenging passages, how to better understand what the questions are asking, how to feel confident about answer choices and eliminate any that are meant to distract, and how to effectively skim and manage time. As with my other lessons, MCAT Verbal lessons are modified to best attend to my student's individual needs. My master's and doctoral work has been in reading and literacy, so I am uniquely equipped and qualified to help students in the verbal section.
I have been an avid fiber artist since I was a young teenager. I do needlepoint and cross-stitch and have dozens of completed projects. I also am an advanced crocheter and have even developed my own patterns. I love helping others get started with these relaxing, creative arts.
I am a PhD student in education who has finished all of her coursework and preliminary exams. I have taken and have passed the Praxis I with very high scores; in fact, I even received an award for being in the 99th percentile of Praxis I test-takers. I am very familiar with the format of the Praxis and am equipped to tutor in all three sections of the test: reading, writing, and math. I have helped other education students pass the Praxis. I have also passed the Praxis II in English, mathematics, and health for grades 7-12 in Pennsylvania.
We'll cover tricks and tips that will save you time, and we'll only use methods that will work for you. I'll help you master vocabulary and learn how to get through those tricky author's tone and comparing two passages questions.
We'll break down grammar concepts, delineate popular types of questions so you're familiar with the patterns of grammar questions, and write practice essays. You'll get extensive feedback on your writing that will help you identify key areas for improvement, instead of just getting a score or some ambiguous feedback that teachers are known for like "vague" or "wordy."
Throughout my years of experience as a high school teacher and as a tutor, I have worked with innumerable students on their study skills. We talk about organization, note-taking, personal responsibility, self-advocacy, and test-taking strategies. These study skills are invaluable in a student's success in K-12 classes and beyond.
I have been working with several students on the TEAS test, particularly on the verbal skills, reading comprehension, and mathematics sections of the test. However, I am also prepared to help students with the biology and chemistry questions that appear on the science test.
After years as a high school teacher and tutor of standardized tests like the SAT and the GRE, I am truly prepared to help students master vocabulary. I'm armed with an arsenal of flashcards, lists, and unique vocabulary study strategies. I'm also skilled at helping students use grammar and context to glean enough meaning to answer questions successfully. Additionally, I help students learn how to use new vocabulary words correctly so their spoken and written vocabulary becomes more sophisticated.
I consider myself first and foremost a teacher of writing. I help students recognize their own strengths as a writer, as well as any patterns of weakness. I help students develop writing that is sophisticated but readable and interesting. One of my goals is to help students better know how to edit and revise their own work. I have spent years helping students write to prompts and to develop their own ideas for prompt-less writing. As a college professor, I help my graduate students write thesis proposals and dissertations, so I am well versed in sophisticated research. I am especially skilled in MLA and APA format. I also help dozens of students write their college and graduate school application essays each fall.
