I'm an award-winning English teacher whose performance has led WyzAnt to rank me in the top 1 per cent of their thousands of tutors nationwide. I've offered broad and consistently successful instruction in grammar, speech, reading, writing, literature, history, film study, and test-taking skills to students of every age and ability level, including speakers of ten different European and Asian languages. As a Fulbright or visiting professor, I have taught the latter groups in settings ranging from the United States and Canada through Central Europe to China and Japan.
I graduated magna cum laude/Phi Beta Kappa from Swarthmore College with a major in history and hold advanced degrees in English from two of the most prestigious universities in this country: MA with high honors, Columbia; PhD with distinction, Johns Hopkins. I have published extensively in both print and electronic media on subjects ranging from folk music and grand opera through travel and restaurant reviews to literary, cinematic, and Biblical studies. My breadth of expertise is further attested in my varied WyzAnt tutorial certifications. That wealth of knowledge equips me to work with students in practically any area of mutual interest, and to help my clients develop and perfect essays on almost any topic that a teacher might assign.
Students who begin work with me nearly always continue for months at a time, or even longer. They award my teaching consistently superior ratings, and they respond appreciatively to my easygoing manner and sense of humor. Whatever the subject might be, all of my teaching is grounded in my firm beliefs in "starting where the student is," and in positive encouragement as the best means to helping students to discover talents they had not suspected they had, to achieve their goals, and to realize their fullest potential.
