I am a former college instructor with ten years of experience teaching beginning, intermediate, and advanced Spanish language, literature, and culture. I am a native English speaker with near-native proficiency in Spanish (spoken for 25 years including one year living abroad in Spain) and a PhD in Spanish Linguistics. I have also taught courses on English writing at the college level and can help with grammar, writing structure, style, and organization, research, and using and citing sources. I also have experience teaching ESL to non-native speakers of English (speaking, listening, reading, writing, and grammar), and have taught IBT TOEFL preparation courses.
During my time as an instructor, I worked one on one with many students in order to help them with their course work and to help them learn the best way to study. I am extremely patient with beginning language learners because I know how hard the process can be, and because it is important to boost the student's confidence so he or she is better able to communicate. While learning is a serious business, I believe it is also important to have fun in the process, so I try to integrate games, songs, and the like into my lessons where appropriate. I am interested in tutoring middle school, high school, college, and adult students.
I began attending law school last fall and can also tutor for the LSAT. I received a score of 171, and I can help with any portion of the test. My approach to tutoring for the LSAT depends on the student's needs. With some students, I spent time instructing them on concepts, and with others I only worked through some sample questions and gave them advice on strategies.
I do not have access to a car, so I am limited to tutoring in Philadelphia or the nearby suburbs that are accessible by public transportation.
