My name is Carlene and I am a freelance ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher. I am seeking students that want to improve their English, reading and/or vocabulary skills in a one-on-one setting. I hope to find students that can meet at least TWO times per week. I live in Philadelphia and can meet in the Center City area.
My background is in English and Communications at Temple University. I began teaching ESL in 2010 to Korean students and continued to work as a freelance teacher and volunteer in the Philadelphia area. I have traveled all over the world and taught students from many continents. I LOVE interacting with different types of people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
I have also worked with children and middle/high-school aged youth in a classroom setting as well as one-on-one. I enjoy teaching young people the fundamentals of the English language as well as helping to fine-tune what they've honed already.
In my teaching approach, I allow the student to give me ideas for lessons based on what they want to learn. In our first meeting, we make a list of the things we want to accomplish together and some lesson ideas, books and activities that would help make this possible. Finally, we together create a rough calendar of what will happen each week that we meet and, through hard work and diligence, we can achieve our goal with flying colors.
