I am a first grade teacher in a Philadelphia public school. I have a Bachelor's degree in Elementary education and am PA certified K-6 grades. I also have a Masters' Degree in Teaching English as a Second Language.
I enjoy my job very much and like to be able to give students one on one time in order to help them succeed. Focusing on specific areas really helps students catch up and go above and beyond.
I like to vary the modalities I use while teaching. I believe that a combination of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic (hands-on) methods help students to understand different concepts. I make learning fun, incorporating games whenever possible to make the experience enjoyable and relaxed for the student. I also challenge students to really reach to their next level. I find doing this, without frustrating the student can really help increase their current levels.

Phonics

I am a first grade teacher and work very closely with my students to develop their phonics skills. I use many different type exercises to increase phonemic awareness and practice phoneme segmentation. Practice in these areas increases a child's reading ability. It also helps then to decode unfamiliar words so that they are able to become proficient and successful readers.

ESL/ESOL

I previously tutored a child who was in ESL. He had just moved here about 3 months before I began tutoring him. It was amazing to see how much his language skills improved in just a few months. Along with this experience, I am also attending graduate classes to earn a Master's of ESL.
