Algebra 1

I've tutored algebra 1 at two other national tutoring agencies. I placed out of math in college with a perfect score on my college placement test. I also won the math department award in high school (while taking calculus).

College Counseling

I have worked on applications, essays and resumes for seniors in my high school for seven years. I've always taught senior English and am an MG mentor. Before returning to teaching in 2006, I worked as a college coordinator for a non-profit agency. I helped families with the college app process, filled out FAFSA and CSS profiles, and reviewed financial aid packages as well as arranged college visits and interviews with admissions personnel.

English

I currently teach English 1, English 1 MG, English 4 and English 4AP. I've taught all four high school grades, and eighth grade ESL during my twelve years of teaching. Curriculum includes poetry, grammar, writing, literature, and drama.

GED

My background in test prep and teaching high school helps me qualify to tutor GED students. For many years I tutored students who returned to high school as adults in an effort to get their GED or diploma.

Grammar

I instill daily grammar practice with my freshmen students, and help seniors review specifically for grammar skills necessary for SAT prep, and common writing errors (my college writing research gathered some interesting techniques for teaching grammar). I employ multiple techniques to teach grammar skills based on a student's current performance.

Literature

In my AP class, and my freshmen read between 8 to 10 novels/plays a year -- that's a lot of literature practice! I can help with reading for content, theme, main idea, literary elements and finding quotes to support an idea.

Praxis

I am certified in PA for both English and communications. I passed for both PA and NJ. I also have tutored the Praxis for the basic skills and English tests.

Prealgebra

I've tutored with national agencies in math up through Algebra 1. I did well enough on my college placement test to not need any math. I've taken up through calculus.

Proofreading

As an English teacher, proof reading is a lot of what I do. I have proofed college essays for students across disciplines and proofread cover letters and resumes.

PSAT

My students take the PSAT each fall. I do review with them, and structure grammar lessons and reading lessons around what I know is consistently tested on the PSAT.

Public Speaking

I was a dual major, English and Theater. I am certified in Communications in PA. I also ran a public speaking course for a college prep agency's summer program. I teach public speaking in my high school classes and was chosen to use my demonstration PowerPoint to all junior classes in a high school where I previously taught.

Reading

Reading skills transcend English. I've worked with students struggling with reading comprehension in literature, history, science and research. I've taught high school English for twelve years, and have tutored with different organizations for over fifteen years. Let me help your student break down passages and learn to analyze and evaluate what he or she is reading.

SAT Math

While I teach English, I love math too! Breaking down math problems in the SAT is still a type of critical reading. I placed out of math in college, and took through Calc AP in high school.

SAT Reading

I performed well on the SAT (800 point scale), scoring over a 600 in 1995. I retook it recently for a tutoring agency and scored well enough to teach their program for SAT prep.

SAT Writing

All teachers have had some training in the writing section of the SAT. I have many prompts and formula clues to help students prepare to write clearly, and quickly-- both leading to high scores in this section. I also teach grammar daily in my classes to prepare students for that component.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is a staple in English. Diction is key to effective writing. Students also need a strong vocabulary for test taking. I have multiple texts with vocabulary lists and exercises, along with lessons I've prepared.

Writing

I take pride in helping students discover their voice and learn to revise and edit. There are so many modes of writing, and it's exciting to discuss audience, topic and reasoning with students. Many college essay discussions and revisions have resulted in many top choice acceptances, including to Yale, Brown, Univ of Pennsylvania, Cornell, Amherst, etc.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
