Hi! I am an experienced tutor and editor
and I look forward to working with any student who requires help improving writing
skills. I am also experienced and approved to help students prepare for many standardized exams. It is very important to me that my students enjoy the process. Learning, reading, and writing can be a great source of joy ~ I would like to assist any students who struggle to understand what they are reading or get frustrated when trying to express their thoughts in writing. I am patient, easygoing, consistent, and believe in teaching by positive reinforcement, use of praise, and frequent encouragement.
I edit, help in drafting rewrites, and proofread essays and presentations for adult students and professionals who want to ensure their work is commensurate with their peers. I offer online work to accommodate your busy schedules.
I take every step to make certain my students benefit from maximizing every effort to assist them with areas they find challenging. For example, when tutoring my younger students, I often ask for parental permission allowing me to communicate with my students' teachers. I ask for their input, advice, and recommendations as well as to keep me apprised of current assignments and any areas proving difficult or challenging to the student. It also allows me to make certain that no assigned work is incomplete and/or not submitted on time; I may ask if students can get makeup or extra-credit assignments to improve their grade; and I learn of all observed improvements as well as any areas that still require additional attention. I have found that this guarantees that the student receives the full benefit of maximum attention from all those responsible for providing assistance needed to ensure improvement.
I am always prepared with age- and grade-appropriate lesson materials to make certain my students are engaged while learning. I always ask about their interests to assist me in explaining an assignment or making a point. I find that especially when working with boys, if I use a sports-related reference, the "light bulb" comes on and the point is understood. It also helps in building rapport with my students; they know I care enough to learn about what interests them.
For many, it is an unforgiving and grueling task to comprehend required reading. I have seen the joy expressed by my students when they begin to improve their verbal skills and realize they are capable of comprehending what they are reading, thus achieving their long-term goals. I am most rewarded in helping those who have struggled to the point of frustration, often just giving up, having lost any desire to try to improve their basic language
skills. I volunteered at the Literacy Councils in New Orleans and Norristown for many years; tutored those for whom English
is not their first language; and helped many who, having been just passed over by an apathetic, disinterested educational system, found themselves unable to read even the simplest reading materials. I experience tremendous joy helping those who struggle or just need 'fine-tuning' in understanding more complex materials and writing.
I was an Editor for nearly a decade (college, professional, medical texts, Encyclopedia Yearbooks, and military defense manuals at Boeing). I was a substitute teacher (HS) for several years and published several articles (related to my later, 20+ year career in Broadcast and Cable Advertising). I was a frequent guest speaker and seminar leader at major media conferences.
My love of learning came at an early age. When I began helping others, who struggled at school or rarely read or wrote for pleasure, I realized the innate pleasure of seeing others experience joy in reading, writing, and the learning process.
I believe that no child should suffer for lack of an adequate education. My primary objective is ensuring that any student I tutor will learn to write and speak English as it was meant to be read and heard and discover the pleasure of reading and understanding a great book and not struggling to express thoughts onto paper.
Of greatest significance, I have observed that when all these approaches and beliefs are put into effect, along with improvement in academic skills, my students' self-esteem and confidence markedly benefit.
While I consider myself my student's tutor, I value parental guidance, input, and assistance in relaying any specifics that could be affecting your child's performance. There are many factors that contribute to a student's academic work: they can include personal, social, and school problems. You have intimate knowledge of your child, and I would appreciate your sharing any relevant information so that I can be of the greatest help to your child's education. Anything you relay to me about your child is considered strictly confidential.
While I ask for a 24-hour cancellation email
, I offer makeup sessions. I have found that, especially with my older students, we can incorporate online work particularly when helping them with their essays or major projects. My students are always free to call me when we are utilizing this approach. I am pleased to say that I have helped several students achieve their highest grades ever, and I always enjoy when my students email me to relay how they did on a test, midterm, or final; so far they have all been to tell me how well they did! I give my email address to all of my students and encourage them to ask me for help when needed. I want my students to feel at ease in asking for my help; I believe that is what defines a great tutor.
I hope this gives you sufficient information so you can assess my ability to work effectively with you and your child to vastly improve his or her language skills. To my "future students": I welcome the opportunity to work with many of you and especially to watch you achieve your goals!
