ACT English

English has always been my favorite subject. Without good English, I could not have had the professional success that I have had for over 25 years. It may not be your favorite subject, but I can promise that someone who has a good vocabulary, knows how to spell well, and gets a good score in school assessment writing and reading tests (like the ACT and SAT) will have a big advantage over the students who do poorly in those tests. They are more likely to spell well, learn new words quickly, improve their writing and reading faster, and find learning easier. Let me help you get higher scores in ACT English!

English

English, French, and Writing were my favorite subjects in school and my communication skills have allowed me to be successful in my professional life in three countries! I love tutoring language skills, because they are necessities regardless of what field students enter. Nothing in your professional lives will be more important to you than your ability to communicate. All jobs require good language skills, so I'm delighted to be able to share what I've learned with students and help them to develop or sharpen their own talents.

ESL/ESOL

I've often tutored students for whom English is a second language, and I've been an English copyeditor for foreign authors for 25 years, as well as a French translator. I speak some Spanish and am currently tutoring a Romanian woman in York, PA.

French

I've been a French translator for 25 years, ever since I returned from Paris, where I lived for 9 years. I enjoy tutoring in French and have worked with students of all ages for purposes ranging from fun to business.

GMAT

Let me help you prep for the GMAT. I've had training in scholastic admissions and assessment tests, and feel confident that I can provide tips and techniques not available elsewhere. Please note that I do not offer Math tutoring. I hope to hear from you!

Grammar

Grammar is an integral part of reading, writing, and English as a whole. As I have been fortunate enough to spend 25+ years working with English and French, I feel that I am highly qualified to help any student (whether born in America or foreign) with any grammar problems they may have. Please contact me if I can help you!

GRE

I've had training as a tutor in the GRE (reading and writing sections) and would love to put my skills to work for you and teach you some of the study tips I've learned. If you're scheduled to take the GRE in reading or writing, please contact me, as I believe that I can help you get a higher score!

Literature

I consider myself truly privileged to have been exposed to both English and French Literature. The large number of books, poems, and articles I've had to read in my college and career have truly enriched my life. I would welcome a chance to tutor a literature student who is having trouble with the subject, or is unaware of how fascinating it can be.

Microsoft Word

I've been using MS WORD continuously since 1985. First, I was using on a Classic Mac and then switched to PCs around 1990. I've been tested in MS Word by three employment agencies while looking for a second part-time job during the economic crisis, and received grades of between 80 and 90% proficiency. I should mention that I don't own MS Word 2007 but have been using Ms Word 2003 with 2007 compatibility.

Proofreading

I've been a copy editor for over 20 years, and some of my work has been published on the Internet and in e-book format as articles and translations. I would love to edit your English-language essays, articles or books, so please feel free to contact me!

PSAT

I've had training as a tutor in PSAT (reading and writing) and would love to put my skills to work for you and teach you some of the study tips I've learned. If you're scheduled to take the PSAT (non-Math sections), please contact me, as I believe that I can help you get a higher score!

Reading

Reading and writing have been the mainstay of my professional career. I've worked for 25 years as a French translator and English copy editor and am a published magazine article writer. I've tutored students in reading and writing for over 8 years. If you're having trouble with any of these skills, please contact me!

SAT Reading

I've had extensive training in SAT reading, not only as a tutor, but also in reading-related SAT training. I know some techniques that make SAT reading and retaining information easier. I love reading in general and can help you read with more confidence and remember what you read.

SAT Writing

I've had training as a tutor in SAT reading and writing and would love to put my skills to work for you and teach you some of the study tips I've learned. If you're facing the SAT in reading or writing, please contact me, as I believe that I can help you get a higher score!

Spelling

Spelling is my favorite subject, and the one that has been the most beneficial skill in my professional life. Because I spell well, I can learn new words quickly. As an English editor and French translator, I can think of no skill that I needed more, or have used more in the last 25 years. Spelling well is crucial for a student, too. Without it, writing becomes a really tough obstacle to getting good grades and a good job. I can help you improve your spelling, and thus literally help you to improve your life and your income!

SSAT

I've had training in prepping students for SATs, PSATs, GREs and many other types of scholastic assessment tests. Those tips and techniques, as well as my 8+ years of experience as a tutor, give me confidence that I can help you do well in these exams.

Vocabulary

I'm told that my vocabulary is above-average. If this is true, I have my Mother to thank, because she would never let me read a book without a dictionary within reach. I'm so glad she taught me that, because good reading and writing depend on a good vocabulary. As a tutor, I believe it is really true that the more words you know, the better you write, speak, and understand others. So I would encourage you by every means I know to look up words unfamiliar to you so you can improve your communication skills.

Writing

Writing has been the mainstay of my professional career. I've worked for 25 years as a French translator, English copyeditor, and published magazine article writer, all of which require good writing. I've tutored students in writing for over 8 years. If you're having trouble with this skill, don't hesitate to contact me!

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
