College Counseling
I have spent years working with high school students on their plans for the future, including preparing for college admissions interviews and drafting short answers and essays for application. My students often hear that their application essays stand out from the pack. I deeply enjoy helping students pick the best university for their learning and career goals. I have Pennsylvania Level II teaching certifications in English 7-12, Math 7-12, and Health K-12.
MCAT
For several years, I have been working with students on the verbal section of the MCAT. In lessons, we talk about how to approach the most challenging passages, how to better understand what the questions are asking, how to feel confident about answer choices and eliminate any that are meant to distract, and how to effectively skim and manage time. As with my other lessons, MCAT Verbal lessons are modified to best attend to my student's individual needs. My master's and doctoral work has been in reading and literacy, so I am uniquely equipped and qualified to help students in the verbal section.
Needlework
I have been an avid fiber artist since I was a young teenager. I do needlepoint and cross-stitch and have dozens of completed projects. I also am an advanced crocheter and have even developed my own patterns. I love helping others get started with these relaxing, creative arts.
Praxis
I am a PhD student in education who has finished all of her coursework and preliminary exams. I have taken and have passed the Praxis I with very high scores; in fact, I even received an award for being in the 99th percentile of Praxis I test-takers. I am very familiar with the format of the Praxis and am equipped to tutor in all three sections of the test: reading, writing, and math. I have helped other education students pass the Praxis. I have also passed the Praxis II in English, mathematics, and health for grades 7-12 in Pennsylvania.
SAT Reading
We'll cover tricks and tips that will save you time, and we'll only use methods that will work for you. I'll help you master vocabulary and learn how to get through those tricky author's tone and comparing two passages questions.
SAT Writing
We'll break down grammar concepts, delineate popular types of questions so you're familiar with the patterns of grammar questions, and write practice essays. You'll get extensive feedback on your writing that will help you identify key areas for improvement, instead of just getting a score or some ambiguous feedback that teachers are known for like "vague" or "wordy."
Study Skills
Throughout my years of experience as a high school teacher and as a tutor, I have worked with innumerable students on their study skills. We talk about organization, note-taking, personal responsibility, self-advocacy, and test-taking strategies. These study skills are invaluable in a student's success in K-12 classes and beyond.
TEAS
I have been working with several students on the TEAS test, particularly on the verbal skills, reading comprehension, and mathematics sections of the test. However, I am also prepared to help students with the biology and chemistry questions that appear on the science test.
