I like teaching Math to students who have a tough time in Math. While at the Mathematics, Civics and Sciences Charter School in Philadelphia, I found many students who struggled. But I'm very good at breaking math down into small understandable chunks. I show how math is used in everyday life. For example, when students that have trouble with decimals, we use money. Fractions seem to give everybody a hard time, until I teach them fractions.
While at the Multicultural Academy Charter School, I used Smart Boards and worked on a project to enhance learning of distant students. The project was years before its time. I liked the idea and the concept: through chat, e-books, video conferencing and the newer "learning platforms", students don't have to be in the same room as the teacher. Or be in the same time zone, same continent, or on the same day.
Teaching at the private school New Hope Academy gave me an opportunity to find what students are good at so we don't have to repeat lessons. I can quickly find what you need practice in and provide just enough so that you're proficient. I find what you need to progress in Mathematics and we work together to an understanding and proficiency. Math is a team effort.
As a tutor at NHA, I have spent hundreds of hours teaching students the way to get good scores in the SAT, ACT and the GRE (logic) tests. There are lots of tricks and traps in these tests and we work together to find them so when the real test comes, you're no longer surprised or confused by the questions. Success in math is like music and sports: practice, practice, practice.

According to my daughter, she felt that John helped her in clarifying the process of reaching scientific notation. However, the process needs to be pounded in (ie. Placement of decimals, commas, adding, subtracting, etc.)
I did not make the last session because I was working, but my daughter liked the session and felt it was helpful to her. Her grade in math is at or around 74 or 75, which, at this time, is acceptable due to where she was before. Waiting for another test, quiz, repetition, 101 math etc. Thanks!
My daughter benefited from her session with you and thank you.
Thank you, for providing the work sheets. According to Alexis, she benefited from this session.
Yes, Santa Claus will definitely reward her. Thanks, and have a great Christmas and New Years. We will see you after the holidays!
When I first learned I was going to be taught Java, I was excited, however after realizing how fast my accelerated courses moved, I knew I was going to need some help grasping the concepts. Enter John. He was a pleasure to work with, very patient to match my learning speed, extremely knowledgeable, and adaptable as well. He was very easy to get into contact with, making as many sessions with me as needed. Without John, I'm not sure if I would have graduated, which I just did with a BA in IS, and recommend him to anyone in need of help related to JAVA. Once again, thanks John.
I'd recommend John for anyone who struggles with math. In addition to teaching in an easy & simplified way he was able to find the way I learn & adjust the lesson accordingly. It was nice to have someone who knows several approaches to a problem but takes the time to determine which is best for you. I work 3rd shift & am a parent. I was very tired for the lesson, he was very patient and tries to work with you on times and days for his availability.
John's knowledge of the ASVAB math material is extremely helpful. We went through the problems in the ASVAB book, each one thoroughly explained in a way I understood. I only had three lessons with John, but I learned more than I did during my high school years in a math class. 5 solid stars!
John knows his subject well. My son could follow him and understand his teaching. He is pleasant and timely. My son is advanced in math but needed a refresher for the SAT.
My daughter struggled with Algebra 1 and John has helped her so much. He's patient and very nice and is able to get through to her. She has so much more confidence when it comes to doing assignments. Yeah John! Thank You!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I'm qualified to tutor in computer programming because I graduated from Temple University with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Computer Science. I spent 12 years programming in C, C++, COBOL and other languages before leaving to become a math teacher. I am currently studying Java to take the Java Certification exam later this year. While teaching mathematics at New Hope Academy, I also taught Alice - a visual programming platform built for teaching children.
I really like teaching programming. To watch the eyes of students light up when they realized that what they wrote cause the computer to do things for them is wonderful.
