My name's Rebekah and I'm an English teacher, though I have experience teaching World Cultures, Geology, Astronomy, Art, History, Piano, Voice, French and other subjects. I hold an ESL certification, have nine years experience and specialize in University/College Prep. Teachers should be enthusiastic, creative, personable and dedicated to their students--all traits I have innately. I am only interested in students who are willing to work hard to excel (as most are by nature) and would love to hear from you. Please inquire if your student is struggling or has been labeled "unteachable." I have a certain passion for seeing the "hopeless" blossom.
I have been working with ESL for many years, starting when I was fourteen. My first experience with ESL was when a friend of mine started taking me on her Bible studies with Chinese immigrants. These were basically lessons in learning English reading and writing using Bible topics. It is a fast-learning method that starts with the letters used most often in the English language, then words you can use with those letters, and so on. It taught reading and writing at the same time. I found this method to be very effective, and still use it with some of my current Chinese students.
I also graduated from Oxford Seminars ESL certification program last summer. We learned many different ways of teaching ESL, using games, ways to make book work more interesting, etc. It was very intense but I had a great teacher. I've used some of these techniques with one student so far, who has been greatly satisfied.
I've been giving public presentations since I was very young (7 years old), when my mother encouraged me to sign up for a program "for developing ability as a speaker and a teacher", as the program still claims today. It is an excellent program offered through our place of worship that has prerequisite lessons that teach a person how to listen to students and speakers, how to do research, how to write "talks" or presentations, etc. After those lessons are completed, students have to complete 53 lessons in various aspects of public speaking. Students do this by studying provided material on the topic, then writing a presentation (there are no outlines for these, only an assigned topic and title, and no provided research), then actually demonstrating what they learned by giving the presentation. When a student completes those lessons, they can start the list again, or opt out of the program. I don't intend to leave it- especially after the college classes I've taken in public speaking (I've been very disappointed with secular education in this subject).
I've used what I've learned (and continue to learn) well. I taught my first public class at the age of 14, and have given presentations in front of the community and on various topics at high schools and universities. I taught a workshop for public speaking abilities, and currently oversee all public speaking matters for a local non-profit organization.
I always make reviewing my presentation an option for the attendees and have yet to receive a negative review on my speaking ability.
To summarize, my qualifications boil down to intense private schooling, public secular schooling at the university level, and extensive experience in various related fields/settings. I am able to provide references.
