My undergraduate coursework included over 100 hours of volunteering in an elementary school classroom as a tutor and educational assistant. These hours included tutoring and instruction in all elementary school subjects.
My undergraduate degree is a B.A. in Music Education, and I taught as a Level 2 Certified teacher in the Penncrest School District from 1993-2000. I taught general music K-8 and directed choral groups, ensembles, and musical theater experiences. I also offered private piano lessons to students.
While I left teaching in a public school system, I have been actively engaged in vocational youth ministry and working with students of all ages on a volunteer basis since 2000. I recently completed a Masters in Divinity and am well-equipped to work with students in Bible-based lessons, theology, Christian ethics and comparative religions.
I am a creative teacher who likes to employ hands-on and practical methods to help students learn. I have a background in multiple intelligence research, and I focus on a student's intelligence preference and learning style preference when tutoring.
My goal is to help the student learn and apply the material rather than just memorizing information to pass a test. While I live in Meadville, I travel often to Erie and am willing to travel to other locations as well.
I attended an undergraduate program which required biblical studies classes, and I recently completed a Masters of Divinity with a significant amount of biblical study, exegesis and theology included in the program. During these courses, I engaged both the Hebrew Bible and New Testament using a number of different interpretive lenses and methods. I have also spent ten years working as a youth minister and providing biblical instruction for students.
I have been cooking and baking since I was a small child. My recipes are often-requested at church and volunteer organization dinners. I also sell my baked goods on a regular basis (as requested) and have, on occasion, been paid to cater special occasion dinners for friends and neighbors. Though not formally trained, I have a good working knowledge of various cooking methods and techniques which are useful for home cooks.
I scored high in the National Teacher's Assessment in all elementary subjects and have tutored elementary students on occasion. I like to use hands-on, practical methods to help young students grasp concepts. I also have experience in teaching using a student's primary intelligence and learning style to increase comprehension and to bolster other methods of learning.
I have a B.A. in Music Education K-12. I also have 7 years experience in teaching General Music and directing choirs. General Music courses included basic music history, theory, notation and performance skills. I also was a TA and tutor for music theory and music history while in college.
I have used Microsoft Publisher exclusively for creating calendars, flyers, booklets and other publications since 1998. I am familiar with all Publisher platforms from 1998-2010. I also have experience transferring Publisher created projects to PDF formats which can be opened and read digitally by any user. I have trained others within my work contexts to user Publisher as well.
I have a B.A. in Music Education K-12 which included several courses in music history and the history of musical theater. I also taught an overview of music history as part of the curriculum when I served for seven years as a general music teacher.
During my junior high, high school and college years, I participate in volunteer programs which used phonics to assist children in learning to read. As a teacher, my music program assisted classroom teachers by teaching the students songs and rhymes about phonics. I also have experience in using the Letter People to teach phonics and alliteration to young children.
I have been playing piano since 1976 and have a Piano Concentration as part of my B.A. in Music Education. I also have taught piano lessons in the past. I typically use a combination of the John Thompson and John W. Schaum piano methods as well as incorporating popular music into the curriculum. As students progress, I also teach using jazz and classical pieces in their original form.
I have a Masters in Divinity from Iliff School of Theology. I also have worked for various churches since 2000 in the capacity of worship leader, preacher, youth minister, and teacher.
As a learner myself, I have discovered that traditional study skills are not always effective for me. I am well-versed in traditional study skills, but I also am well-equipped with my own variations to suit non-traditional learners, students with ADD and students who may learn better through spatial relationships or tactile experiences.
