Hello, my name is Courtney and my field of study is communications. With a communications background, I am prepared to tailor a lesson to the learning style and level of my student. I am willing to take on short term or long term; whether you need help with a course or someone to prepare you for a big presentation. I am also passionate about classical music and opera. Elementary (K-6th)

Working with children means finding a way to make the material "click" and doing it in a way that will be engaging to all senses. I like to incorporate real-life application to subjects to help kids grasp the ideas. While working at the Long Island Philharmonic, we provided programming for children of all ages to expose them to music and teach them about the composers and time period. Developing children's programs and going to schools was extremely rewarding work.

General Music

I minored in music for my degree and have been studying and performing music my whole life. I have played piano, guitar, marimba/vibes, as well as studied Classical and Baroque vocal performance. General music instruction will involve developing an appreciation for music. It would involve a review of instruments, composition, terminology, listening and styles. Concert attendance would be encouraged.

Music History

In-depth discussion and analysis of specific topics in music history. We can review a specific time period, style or country. Focus on cultural influence as it shaped the subject to provide context. My favorite subject is Mozart. I minored in music for my degree and have taken courses including Music Appreciation; Music Styles and Structure; Introduction to Jazz; Electronic Music; Opera; Music History; Basic Audio Recording; Vocal Performance; and an independent study of Mozart.

Public Speaking

Public speaking is a top to bottom subject. From researching a topic, developing subject matter, writing a speech, creating visual aids, delivery, overcoming fears or tics, and working within restraints. Tutoring can be for overall public speaking or preparation for a specific presentation.

Cooking

I am an avid, self-taught cook and baker. I believe that you have to eat, so you may as well eat well when you can. Cooking is a basic life skill that everyone should have a background in. Once you build a basic foundation, you can cook a lot of great meals! I love cooking side-by-side with beginners in the kitchen--hands on is the only way to learn. We will go over kitchen safety, tools and technique, understanding ingredients, useful references, cooking around dietary needs and menu planning.
